Interview with Denis Selezniov, the winner of our Winter Model Contest 2
Interview with Denis Selezniov, the winner of our Winter Model Contest

Denis Selezniov is the winner of our Winter Model Contest. We were really curious about his modeling experience and how he saw model making. Denis agreed to answer some questions. Below you can find the whole interview.

Exito: Hello, first we would like to congratulate you for claiming the Grand Prix of our contest! It is a well deserved prize, the model is stunning in detail and in finish!

Denis: I would like to thank you once again for the contest you hold. It was a pleasure for me to take part in it and win the Grand Prix.

We, as well as our readers, would like to know more about how long it took you to finish this one and if you used any additional details like p.e. parts, resin etc?

The model Bussing Nag 4500А with Bilstein 3t Crane was built within 5 months. I used the model kit AFV Club AF35279, which I bought in your online shop. Also I used resin wheels by Panzer Art, photoetched parts by Part, metal cable by Eureka XXL, resin Maybach HL 230 P30 by CMK and Plus Model accessories.

What paints and weathering products did you use?

The model was painted with Tamiya acrylic paints, for weathering I used products from AMMO and AK Interactive.

Please tell us how long have you been making model kits? I think many observers of our contest would like to know more about your experience in this hobby.

I started with scale modeling when I was 12 years old and have been building models for over 30 years. During this time, modeling has incredibly progressed in terms of realism and weathering. New companies and new products appeared. Nowadays, with the help of modern weathering products, you can create very impressive models.

For beginners I would recommend the excellent Encyclopedia of Armour Modeling Techniques by Mig Jimenez. By the way, you have it in Polish in your online shop. I like models of military vehicles and tanks. The secret of a successful model is very simple — neat, well thought out assembling + accurate and proper arrangement of fine details + neat painting + realistic weathering.

Do you build models only at home or you have already shown them in public?

I participate in exhibitions and competitions in my country on a regular basis. I am very pleased when people like my models. I often communicate with young modelers, share my experience with them.

What got you into the hobby?

My father used to build working models of ships, he led me to this hobby. From him I learned patience and perseverance which you need to get a praiseworthy result.

What are your favourite modelling subjects?

My favorite theme is to build scale models of WW2 trucks. Sometimes I build models of modern armored vehicles.

What advice would you give to the ones that are just getting started in this hobby and for those more experienced?

For those who are just starting with this hobby, I would advise not to give up after their first failures. Very often people quit modeling after the first unsuccessful model. I would like to wish beginners as well as experienced modelers to get pleasure from the modeling process. Each, even a very simple model is an individual work of a person. This individuality is often lacking in the modern world.

Thank you very much for your time and sharing with us your experience and your point of view on modeling. We wish you many interesting projects in the future and other successful competitions.

Many thanks. I will definitely take part in your future competitions :)

Below more kits made by Denis: BMP-2 (Trumpeter) and Medium Tank T-55A (Tamiya).

OUSTANDING JOB DENIS, SPECIALLY THE T-55 AWSOME. GREETINGS FROM MEXICO!

6 August 2021

Myself and most of my IPMS aircraft modelling friends always agree that portraying realistic AFVs is one of the most difficult modelling challenges. I therefore never attempt it myself but fully appreciate the work of those who do. The examples of Denis's work shown here - especially the T-55 - are outstanding. Well done Denis!!
