Marking masks – a modern alternative to decals

Marking masks are an accessory for modellers who want to reproduce national insignia, codes, numbers and data stencils by painting them rather than applying decals. Painted markings sit directly in the paint layer, so they have no visible carrier-film edge and no risk of the silvering that can affect decals laid over a matt surface. They also make it easy to reproduce natural wear – chipping and scuffing.

1 Man Army masks are made of a thin, low-tack masking film suited to delicate model surfaces. The recommended method is to transfer the mask onto the model, press the edges down firmly, apply a thin coat of paint with an airbrush, and once dry carefully remove the mask. The surface should be clean, dry and fully cured. The manufacturer recommends not stretching the masks during application and building the paint up in thin coats, which gives a sharp marking edge without a visible step.

About the aircraft – Curtiss P-40N Warhawk:

The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was an American fighter of the Second World War, one of the most heavily produced of its type. The P-40N was the last and also the most numerous production variant, optimised for performance – the structure was lightened to reduce weight, including simplified equipment and modified systems.

The P-40N was powered by an Allison V-1710 inline engine and armed with 12.7 mm machine guns. Aircraft of this type fought in many theatres and served with the United States and numerous allies, including in British and Australian markings, where P-40 variants were known as the Kittyhawk.
