Painting masks for markings – an alternative to decals

Masks are an accessory for modellers who want to reproduce markings by painting them rather than applying decals. Painted markings sit directly on the paint layer, so they have no visible carrier-film edge and no risk of the silvering that can occur with decals applied over a matt surface.

1 Man Army masks are cut from low-tack self-adhesive yellow paper (Kabuki-type masking tape) suited to delicate model surfaces. The recommended method is to transfer the mask onto the model with transfer tape, press down the edges, airbrush a thin coat of paint, and remove the mask once it has dried. The masks are intended for single use; the surface should be clean, dry and fully cured, and the mask should not be left on the model for more than a few days.

About the aircraft – Hawker Sea Fury FB.11:

The Hawker Sea Fury is a British single-seat carrier fighter and one of the fastest piston-engined aircraft ever built. It appeared in the closing stages of the Second World War as a development of the Hawker Tempest – lighter, sleeker and more versatile. It was powered by the Bristol Centaurus radial engine, providing high speed and excellent climb performance.

The FB.11 (fighter-bomber) was the principal ground-attack version, able to carry bombs, rockets and drop tanks. The Sea Fury entered Royal Navy service after the war and saw action in the Korean War, where it became famous as one of the few piston-engined aircraft to score victories over jet MiGs. The type was also operated by many other countries.
