What is a filter?

Filtering a model kit is a technique in which you apply very translucent layers in different colours to a base paint. It allows you to alter the tonation of the model at the same time giving it some depth and chromatic variation thus making the final look more interesting. It is a technique used to naturally differentiate the camouflage colours and add individual shades to panels or hatches of vehicles, aircraft or ships. Filtering is widely used and became an important step of every model painting process.

Main advantage of an acrylic filter is its fast drying time compared to the traditional enamel filter. This enables to apply several layers in relatively short time. It is also its main disadvantage as it shortens the time for corrections or washing the layer completely.

Ammo of Mig acrylic filters are packed in a convenient bottles with a dropper that makes it easy to depost few drops on a palette or in an airbrush's paint cup. Wide colour range gives opportunity to create interesting effects on virtually any base colour.

Why you should use filters?

Filters improve realism of your models - regardless of the subject. They make base colours of your model more vivid and lifelike and added chromatic richness will make them look just like the real thing. Straight, -flat- base colour is unrealistic and boring and filter ensures depth and variety of colour shades on the model kit. They will make your models look professional and not like toys. Filtering is a technique used in modelling for years and every modeller should try it! For many it is a neccessary step that helps with making further weathering effects easier.

How to apply filters on a model kit?

Filters are generally very easy to apply. You only need to use a round brush in size optimal for the scale of your model kit. Shake the bottle well before use. Take a small amount of filter onto a brush and apply it evenly on the model's surface avoidin it pooling in recesses and details. Filter should applied in a thin layer. You can use filters in different colours applied on the top of each other or in some areas, which will further vary the hue of the basic colours. They are best applied over a matt surface. On the glossy surface, filters have a tendency to pool. For thinning and removing the filters we can use water or acrylic thinner e.g. Ammo Mig 2000.
