Description
Set of two plastic model kits: Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 “Moggy” and Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB in 1:72 scale
Airfix 40001 is a commemorative set pairing two RAF aircraft that share the name “Typhoon”, though several decades of aviation development lie between them: the modern, multirole Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 and the piston-engined Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB of the Second World War. Both models are linked by the theme of the 80th anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy.
The Eurofighter is reproduced in the commemorative “Moggy” scheme (ZJ913) from 2024 — with wartime camouflage and the distinctive invasion stripes evoking the markings of Allied aircraft over Normandy. The Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB is reproduced in the markings of MN396/FM-G from June 1944, which inspired the modern fighter's scheme.

- Paint guides and illustrated assembly instructions

- Manufacturer: Airfix
- Assembled length: Eurofighter approx. 22 cm, Hawker Typhoon approx. 13.5 cm
- Number of parts: 117 (total for both models)

Building the model:
The set contains two models of different character, which makes it an interesting project. The Hawker Typhoon calls for RAF wartime camouflage and careful application of the invasion stripes, while the Eurofighter needs a clean rendering of its commemorative scheme. Apply the invasion-stripe decals over a gloss coat and finish the aircraft in satin or matt.
Recommended tools:
- Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
- Hobby knife or scalpel
- Files and sandpaper for cleaning up sprue gate marks
- Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
- Brushes in various sizes
- Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
- A wash to bring out the detail
About the aircraft – Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 and Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB:
The Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 is a modern, multirole fighter that forms the backbone of the British RAF. Powered by two jet engines, it reaches supersonic speeds and is continually upgraded. Aircraft of this type appear regularly at air shows, often in commemorative schemes.
The Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB is a British fighter of the Second World War that became famous as one of the most effective ground-attack aircraft. Originally designed as an interceptor, it proved its worth above all in low-level attacks, carrying bombs and unguided rockets. Aircraft of this type intensively supported the Normandy landings in 1944.
Specifications of the originals:
- Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 — length: approx. 16 m; span: approx. 11 m
- Eurofighter — powerplant: two Eurojet EJ200 turbojets; speed approx. Mach 2
- Hawker Typhoon Mk.IB — length: approx. 9.7 m; span: approx. 12.7 m
- Hawker Typhoon — powerplant: Napier Sabre engine; top speed approx. 660 km/h
- Hawker Typhoon — armament: four 20 mm cannon, bombs or rockets
