Description

Plastic model kit of the MiG-17F Deluxe Edition jet fighter in 1:48 scale

Ammo Mig 8519 is a model for self-assembly representing the Soviet MiG-17F jet fighter (NATO code Fresco C) — one of the most recognisable combat aircraft of the Cold War. The kit is based on new, exclusive tooling, using current injection-moulding technology for a good fit and a high level of detail.

The Deluxe Edition extends the standard contents with numerous upgrade parts: photo-etched parts, Red Fox Studio 3D-printed instrument panels, a set of 3D-printed resin parts and Ginger Cat canopy masks. The model allows positionable flaps, ailerons and air brakes, and the fitting of external fuel tanks, a detailed undercarriage and afterburner interior.

In the box you will find:

  • Plastic sprues (new, exclusive tooling)
  • Photo-etched parts
  • 3D-printed instrument panels (Red Fox Studio)
  • 3D-printed resin parts: ejection seat, two rocket launchers with pylons, ladder, pilot's helmet
  • Canopy masks (Ginger Cat)
  • Detailed afterburner interior and undercarriage with landing gear
  • Positionable flaps and ailerons, and positionable air brakes
  • External fuel tanks
  • Decal sheet for 15 aircraft (11 operators) and an assembly manual

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:48
  • Reference: 8519
  • Manufacturer: AMMO by Mig Jiménez
  • Assembled length: approx. 235 mm, wingspan: approx. 200 mm
  • Difficulty: intermediate/advanced (photo-etch, 3D resin parts, positionable surfaces)

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

The kit is aimed at modellers with some experience — it combines plastic parts with photo-etched and 3D-printed resin parts that call for care when removing and gluing them. The positionable flaps, ailerons and air brakes let you display the model in a dynamic pose, while the detailed afterburner interior and undercarriage reward careful assembly. Cyanoacrylate (CA) glue is recommended for the resin and photo-etched parts, and plastic cement for the styrene parts.

Most MiG-17F aircraft wore a natural metal finish (bare dural/aluminium), so metallic paints (aluminium, steel and duralumin shades) are a good choice. Some operators — including Vietnamese, Egyptian and Syrian — used green, brown and sand camouflage over a light blue underside. The exact colours and schemes for each option are given in the instructions.

Tools you will need:

  • Modelling nippers to remove parts from the sprues
  • Modelling knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper to clean up gate marks
  • Plastic cement and cyanoacrylate (CA) glue for resin and photo-etched parts
  • Brushes of various sizes and, optionally, an airbrush
  • Modelling paints (including metallics for natural-metal finishes)
  • A wash to emphasise details and, optionally, pigments

About the aircraft – MiG-17F (Fresco C):

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17 was one of the most iconic Soviet fighters developed after World War II — the second production jet fighter of the USSR after the MiG-15, and a predecessor of the later MiG-19 and MiG-21. The design was based on the MiG-15 but received a new, more sharply swept wing, a fuselage lengthened by about 20% and a more powerful engine.

The most widespread variant was the MiG-17F (NATO code Fresco C), powered by a Klimov VK-1F turbojet with an afterburner. The aircraft entered service in the early 1950s and was produced not only in the USSR — it was built under licence in Poland as the Lim-5 and in China as the Shenyang J-5.

The MiG-17F became one of the most widely used fighters of the Cold War, serving with the air forces of dozens of countries and taking part in many conflicts of the period. Its simple, durable design and good manoeuvrability kept it in service for many years.

Original aircraft specifications (MiG-17F / Fresco C):

  • Length: approx. 11.26 m
  • Wingspan: approx. 9.63 m
  • Height: approx. 3.80 m
  • Empty weight: approx. 3,930 kg; take-off weight approx. 5,350 kg
  • Powerplant: Klimov VK-1F turbojet with afterburner
  • Maximum speed: approx. 1,100 km/h
  • Service ceiling: approx. 16,600 m
  • Range: approx. 1,080 km (more with drop tanks)
  • Armament: one 37 mm N-37 cannon and two 23 mm NR-23 cannons; hardpoints for tanks, rockets or bombs
  • Crew: 1 pilot

About the manufacturer – AMMO by Mig Jiménez:

AMMO by Mig Jiménez is a Spanish brand founded by Mig Jiménez, a well-known author and populariser of model painting and weathering techniques. It became known above all for its paints, special-effect products and many how-to publications for modellers. In recent years AMMO has expanded into its own plastic model kits, designed on new tooling. The 1:48 MiG-17F range was developed from exclusive moulds and, in editions such as the Deluxe Edition, is supplemented with photo-etched parts, 3D-printed resin, 3D-printed instrument panels and masks. This way the kits combine a model to assemble with upgrade parts in a single box. The brand is now present in model shops worldwide.
