About the Curtiss P-36C Hawk:
The Curtiss P-36 Hawk was the first modern monoplane fighter introduced into service with the USAAC, marking a transition from biplane designs to more advanced aircraft. Features such as retractable landing gear, enclosed cockpit and all-metal construction set new standards for future fighters.
The P-36C variant was a short production series equipped with a more powerful engine and additional wing-mounted machine guns. One of its distinctive features were the external ammunition containers located under the wings. These aircraft were primarily used for training, testing and experimental camouflage programs.
P-36C aircraft played an important role in camouflage trials, especially within the 27th Pursuit Squadron, and appeared in events such as the National Air Races in Cleveland in 1939. Later, they were also used in training roles, including exercises related to the famous Doolittle Raid preparations.
