Description

Plastic model kit of the German McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom II (JG 71 "Richthofen") in 1:72 scale

Fine Molds FX06 represents the F-4F Phantom II – the version of the famous American fighter developed specifically for the West German Luftwaffe. The F-4F was a simplified, lightened derivative of the F-4E, tailored to the needs of the German air force and used primarily for air-defence duties during the Cold War and beyond.

The kit depicts the Phantom in the colours of JG 71 "Richthofen" – the oldest fighter wing of the Luftwaffe, based at Wittmundhafen. The model is built on Fine Molds' modern tooling, with fine surface engraving and extra parts specific to the F-4F version. It includes clear canopy parts and decals for two marking options of the wing – an aircraft from the 1980s and an example from a later service period.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with fuselage, wing and tail components
  • Extra parts specific to the F-4F version
  • Clear canopy parts
  • Waterslide decal sheet for two JG 71 "Richthofen" marking options
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:72
  • Catalogue number: FX06
  • Manufacturer: Fine Molds
  • Assembled length: approx. 267 mm, wingspan: approx. 163 mm
  • Difficulty level: intermediate

Note: This kit does not include cement, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Assembly:

Fine Molds' modern tooling provides fine surface engraving and a clear breakdown of parts, but the higher parts count and the nature of the two-seat cockpit and air intakes make the model better suited to a modeller with some experience. It is worth painting and finishing the cockpit interior before joining the fuselage halves. Masking the clear canopy during painting is recommended.

For painting the F-4F in JG 71 colours, the grey schemes used by the Luftwaffe are recommended – depending on the chosen option, lighter or multi-tone grey combinations in use during the relevant service period. Decals are best applied over a gloss coat to avoid silvering, with a satin coat as the final finish. Exact paint codes and equivalents are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Required tools:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Modelling knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for cleaning up sprue gate marks
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Masks or masking tape for the canopy
  • Brushes of various sizes and an airbrush for large surfaces
  • Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • A wash to emphasise detail

About the aircraft – McDonnell Douglas F-4F Phantom II:

The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is one of the most important fighters of the Cold War era, operated by the United States and many of its allies. The F-4F version was developed specifically for the West German Luftwaffe as a lightened and simplified derivative of the F-4E, adapted to the requirements and budget of the German air force.

The F-4F entered service in the mid-1970s and for many years formed the backbone of German fighter aviation, performing both air-defence and fighter-bomber duties. In the 1990s some of the aircraft went through an upgrade programme that significantly increased their combat capability, including the ability to engage air targets at greater ranges. The Phantoms remained in German service until 2013, when they were finally replaced by a new generation of aircraft.

JG 71 "Richthofen", named after the famous World War I ace, is the oldest post-war fighter wing of the Luftwaffe. Based at Wittmundhafen, the unit was responsible for the air defence of northern Germany for decades and was among the most recognisable Phantom operators in Europe.

Original aircraft specifications (F-4F Phantom II):

  • Length: approx. 19.2 m
  • Wingspan: approx. 11.7 m
  • Height: approx. 5.0 m
  • Empty weight: approx. 13,800 kg
  • Maximum take-off weight: approx. 28,000 kg
  • Powerplant: two General Electric J79 afterburning turbojets
  • Maximum speed: approx. 2,370 km/h (about Mach 2.2) at altitude
  • Ceiling: approx. 18,000 m
  • Crew: 2 (pilot and weapon systems officer)
  • Armament: 20 mm cannon and air-to-air missiles
  • F-4F production for the Luftwaffe: approx. 175 examples (1970s)
