Description
Plastic model kit of the NASA AD-1 experimental aircraft
Fly 72062 kit in 1:72 scale represents the NASA AD-1, an experimental aircraft designed to test the oblique wing concept. Built as a one-off prototype, it flew between 1979 and 1982 and remains one of NASA’s most unusual research aircraft.
Model specifications:
- Scale: 1:72
- Wingspan: approx. 15.5 cm
- Length: approx. 13.8 cm
- Manufacturer: Fly
- Skill level: intermediate
Note: Glue, paints and modeling tools are not included. The kit is intended for self-assembly.
Model building:
The kit includes detailed parts of the fuselage and the characteristic pivoting wing that defined the AD-1. This makes it a perfect addition to any collection of experimental or research aircraft models. Clear assembly instructions guide the modeler through the building process.
Recommended tools:
- Modeling knife or sprue cutters
- Files or sanding sticks
- Brushes and/or airbrush
- Plastic glue
- Paints in NASA color schemes
- Optional cyanoacrylate glue for small parts
About the NASA AD-1:
The NASA AD-1 (Ames-Dryden 1) was an experimental aircraft built to study the aerodynamic characteristics of an oblique, pivoting wing. The wing could be rotated from 0° to 60° in flight to optimize performance under different conditions. First flown in 1979, the AD-1 completed over 70 test flights. Despite aerodynamic and stability limitations, the aircraft provided valuable data for future wing design research. It remains one of NASA’s most distinctive and iconic research aircraft.
Technical data of the original:
- Manufacturer: Ames Industrial Co. / NASA
- Engines: 2 × Microturbo TRS18-046 turbojets, 1.0 kN thrust each
- Wingspan: 9.8 m
- Length: 11.8 m
- Take-off weight: approx. 658 kg
- Maximum speed: approx. 270 km/h
- Number built: 1
- Testing period: 1979–1982
