About the aircraft carrier Shōkaku

Shōkaku was one of the core carriers of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s early-war strike forces. Combining speed, durability, and a powerful air group, she played a major role in Japan’s initial series of victories across the Pacific. In 1941 she operated in the attack on Pearl Harbor, strikes in Southeast Asia, and the Coral Sea campaign. Shōkaku was ultimately sunk in June 1944 during the Battle of the Philippine Sea after torpedo hits from U.S. carrier aircraft.

Technical data of the original:

  • Length: approx. 257.5 m
  • Displacement: approx. 32,100 tons (standard)
  • Air group: approx. 84 aircraft
  • Armament: various anti-aircraft batteries
  • Propulsion: steam turbines, approx. 160,000 hp
  • Top speed: approx. 34 knots
