Description

1:16 scale plastic set of early-type British four-gallon petrol tins

Gecko Models 16GM0040 is a self-assembly set reproducing the early-type British four-gallon petrol tins, nicknamed "flimsies". These were simple, lightweight, thin-walled containers used in large numbers to transport fuel in the early period of the Second World War. The value-pack format contains a full complement of tins, letting you populate a larger scene or several vehicles.

The large 1:16 scale emphasises the characteristic rectangular shape with its pressed ribs and central handle. The set works well as part of a diorama depicting a refuelling point, a fuel dump or cargo on the bed of a truck.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic parts for the petrol tins (value pack)
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:16
  • Catalogue number: 16GM0040
  • Manufacturer: Gecko Models
  • Skill level: beginner

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

Assembly is very simple and approachable even for beginners. Once built, it is worth varying the appearance of the individual tins when painting – uniform colouring looks artificial, whereas in reality they differed in wear, dirt and leak marks. Khaki, olive and sand tones are typical; rust, streaking and dust effects can be achieved with washes and pigments.

Tools you will need:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for smoothing sprue-gate marks
  • Plastic cement
  • Brushes of various sizes
  • Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • A wash and pigments for rust, streaking and dust effects

About the tins – British "flimsies":

The four-gallon petrol tins, ironically nicknamed "flimsies" by the troops, were an early British solution for transporting fuel. Their thin construction was prone to leaking and damage, so a significant part of their contents was lost in transit. Despite their flaws they played an important logistical role, especially in the harsh conditions of North Africa.

Only the introduction of the far sturdier can modelled on the German "jerry can" solved the problem of losses. The "flimsies" nonetheless remain a characteristic feature of early scenes involving British and Commonwealth forces, and make a recognisable period detail in a diorama.

About the manufacturer – Gecko Models:

Gecko Models kits are valued for their attention to detail and for subjects less commonly offered by other manufacturers.
