About the PZL M18 Dromader

The PZL M18 Dromader is a Polish utility aircraft developed at the PZL Mielec factory in the 1970s. It was originally designed as an agricultural aircraft for crop spraying, fertilizing, and pest control.

The aircraft’s strong airframe and powerful radial engine made it suitable for demanding operations, including low-altitude flights and frequent takeoffs and landings. Because of its reliability and large payload capacity, the aircraft was later adapted for other specialized roles.

One of these roles was aerial firefighting. In this configuration the aircraft can carry water or fire-retardant chemicals in a tank located in the fuselage and release them over wildfire areas. Dromaders have been exported to many countries and used by firefighting services around the world.

Technical data of the original aircraft:

  • Length: approx. 9.47 m
  • Wingspan: approx. 17.75 m
  • Powerplant: PZL ASz-62IR radial engine
  • Power: approx. 1000 hp
  • Maximum speed: approx. 250 km/h
  • Crew: 1–2
