Description

Plastic model kit of the Junkers Ju 88A-11 aircraft in 1:48 scale

ICM 48235 represents the Junkers Ju 88A-11 — a tropicalized version based on the A-4 airframe, adapted for the harsh environmental conditions of North Africa and the Mediterranean region. The key differences compared to the standard A-4 were dust filters fitted to the engine air intakes and additional survival equipment (including an anchor and emergency ditching gear). Ju 88A-11 aircraft operated with Lehrgeschwader 1 units, carrying out bombing missions over Malta, Libya, and Egypt in 1942.

This kit is the first and only dedicated 1:48 scale offering by ICM for the tropical Ju 88 variant. The model is based on the proven tooling of the Ju 88 A-series, while the newly added filters and survival equipment distinguish the A-11 from other versions. High-quality surface detailing and finely recessed panel lines are characteristic features of this series.

Inside the box:

  • 226 plastic and clear parts
  • Parts specific to the tropical version (dust filters, survival equipment)
  • Two Jumo 211 engines with optional display
  • Separate control surfaces
  • Water-slide decal sheet for 2 marking options (North Africa 1942)
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:48
  • Catalog number: 48235
  • Manufacturer: ICM
  • Finished model length: approx. 300 mm, wingspan: approx. 418 mm
  • Difficulty level: intermediate

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints, or modeling tools. The model requires self-assembly.

Model assembly:

Assembly follows the same process as other kits in the ICM Ju 88 series. Special attention should be paid to the proper installation of the dust filters on the engine air intakes — these are the key visual features distinguishing the tropical variant. The camouflage schemes are based on the typical Luftwaffe desert colors: RLM 79 Sandgelb and RLM 80 Olivgrün on the upper surfaces, with RLM 78 Himmelblau underneath, complemented by yellow Mediterranean theater identification markings.

Essential tools:

  • Modeling sprue cutters for removing parts from the frames
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sanding paper
  • Plastic cement
  • Brushes in various sizes
  • Model paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • Model wash for highlighting details

About the aircraft – Junkers Ju 88A-11:

The Ju 88A-11 was a tropicalized version of the standard A-4, developed specifically for operations in the extremely demanding desert environment. The dust filters protected the Jumo 211 engines from damage caused by the dust and sand of North Africa, which posed a serious operational problem for all air forces in this theater of war. Ju 88A-11 aircraft served with Lehrgeschwader 1 during operations over Malta and North Africa in 1942, taking part in intensive bombing campaigns against naval and land targets across the Mediterranean.

Technical specifications of the original aircraft (Ju 88A-11):

  • Length: approx. 14.4 m
  • Wingspan: 20.08 m
  • Crew: 4
  • Powerplant: two Jumo 211J engines, approx. 1,340 hp each
  • Maximum speed: approx. 470 km/h
  • Dust filters fitted to the engine air intakes (tropical feature)
  • Emergency ditching survival equipment
