Description

Plastic model kit of the Junkers Ju 88C-6 aircraft in 1:48 scale

ICM 48238 represents the Junkers Ju 88C-6 — a heavy fighter version of the Ju 88 family developed from the A-4 airframe. The main distinguishing feature of the C-series was the replacement of the glazed nose with a solid metal nose section housing the armament: one 20 mm MG FF cannon and three 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns. The ventral gondola was equipped with an additional pair of MG FF cannons. Ju 88C-6 aircraft were used from 1942 onward for anti-shipping operations over the Atlantic and Mediterranean, as well as heavy fighter duties on the Eastern Front with units such as ZG 26 and KG 40.

The model expands the A-4 series tooling with a new sprue containing the solid fighter nose and a properly configured ventral gondola. The overall shape, recessed panel lines, and detailed cockpit remain consistent with the rest of the ICM Ju 88 series.

Inside the box:

  • Plastic and clear sprues
  • Solid fighter nose with openings for MG FF cannon and MG 17 machine gun barrels
  • Ventral gondola with MG FF cannons
  • Two Jumo 211 engines with optional display
  • Water-slide decal sheet for 4 marking options
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:48
  • Catalog number: 48238
  • Manufacturer: ICM
  • Finished model length: approx. 300 mm, wingspan: approx. 418 mm
  • Difficulty level: intermediate

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints, or modeling tools. The model requires self-assembly.

Model assembly:

Assembly is similar to the bomber variants in the ICM Ju 88 series. The key stage is the proper fitting of the solid fighter nose and the cannon-equipped ventral gondola — these components are the primary identifying features of the C-series. Fighter camouflage schemes typically use RLM 70/71 on the upper surfaces and RLM 65 underneath; Mediterranean-based aircraft may also feature additional unit markings and decorations.

Essential tools:

  • Modeling sprue cutters for removing parts from the frames
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sanding paper
  • Plastic cement
  • Brushes in various sizes
  • Model paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • Model wash for highlighting details

About the aircraft – Junkers Ju 88C-6:

The Ju 88C-6 was a heavy fighter version introduced in 1942 as a development of the earlier C-4. Replacing the glazed nose with an armored metal section carrying forward-firing weapons transformed the bomber into a formidable gun platform capable of engaging Allied ships, submarines, and bombers alike. Ju 88C-6 aircraft served with Zerstörergeschwader 26 in the Mediterranean and with KG 40 over the Atlantic, carrying out patrol and convoy escort missions. On the Eastern Front, they were used as heavy fighters against Soviet aircraft and ground vehicles. Approximately 900 Ju 88C-6 aircraft were produced.

Technical specifications of the original aircraft (Ju 88C-6):

  • Length: approx. 14.4 m
  • Wingspan: 20.08 m
  • Crew: 3
  • Powerplant: two Jumo 211J engines, approx. 1,340 hp each
  • Maximum speed: approx. 480–500 km/h
  • Armament: 1× 20 mm MG FF + 3× 7.92 mm MG 17 (nose) + 2× MG FF (ventral gondola)
