The Mirage Hobby Hobby Sanding Sponge Sheet #2000 is a flexible abrasive sponge sheet in very fine (polishing) grit, made for modellers and precise finishing work. It is well suited to working plastic and resin parts and to preparing surfaces for painting. Thanks to its flexible construction, the sheet conforms to the shape of the surface — flat, curved or hard to reach.

The soft structure allows even sanding of complex surfaces, while the springiness of the material makes it easier to work in corners and around details. The sheet can be bent and shaped, and cut to any size for the task at hand. Wet sanding reduces dust and improves the quality of the finish.

Characteristics and use

The sheet combines an abrasive material with a flexible backing, so during sanding it presses the grit evenly against the surface and conforms to its shape. This is especially helpful on curves, edges and hard-to-reach areas, where rigid sandpaper tends to leave unevenness. The sheet is easy to cut with a hobby knife into smaller pieces matched to the part.

It can be used dry or wet. Wet sanding (with a little water) reduces dust, prevents the grit from clogging and produces a smoother finish — particularly recommended at higher grits and for polishing. We suggest progressing gradually from coarser to finer grits and working with light, even pressure.

It works well on plastic model kits, resin and 3D-printed parts and in modelling tasks that call for careful surface work. The choice of grit depends on the stage of work — it is worth keeping several grits on hand and moving from coarser to finer.
