Mirage Hobby figure bases — round 40 mm, set of 20

Mirage Hobby 100155 is a set of 20 round bases, 40 mm in diameter, designed for mounting and displaying wargaming figures, scale miniatures and collectible figures. The bases also work well as a foundation for small dioramas and vignettes. They are made of plastic, are 3 mm thick and have a smooth surface that can be painted and personalised to your own design.

Each base has a central recess for a 5 × 2 mm magnet. It lets you seat a neodymium magnet and conveniently hold the figure to a steel tray or transport case, which makes moving painted miniatures around safe and easy. Magnets are not included in the set.

Figure bases — mounting, magnetising and painting

Bases are a standard finishing element for wargaming figures and collectible miniatures. They give a figure a stable footing, give a collection a consistent look and provide room for a small groundwork scene built from scatter material, grass and minor surrounding details. A 40 mm diameter is one of the popular sizes used across many wargaming systems, typically for larger figures, cavalry-style mounts and monsters.

The central recess makes magnetising figures easy. Once a 5 × 2 mm neodymium magnet is seated in it, the figure holds to a steel surface, so it can be transported safely in a steel-lined case or on a magnetic tray. Before painting it is worth scuffing the smooth surface and applying a primer; it takes acrylic paints well, whether brushed or airbrushed. Each base can be finished however you like — from a plain paint job to elaborate groundwork.
