Analog or digital control – what to choose?

The key advantage of digital control systems is the ability to independently operate multiple locomotives on the same track. In analog mode, all locomotives on the same section respond to voltage changes together, making separate operation difficult without complex wiring.

Digital systems maintain constant voltage in the rails, and each locomotive is controlled individually by digital commands from the control station. This allows for precise and independent train operation, even in compact layouts.

About the TKt48 locomotive:

The TKt48 is a Polish steam tank locomotive designed in the post-war period for use on local and mountainous railway lines. Built between 1950 and 1957 by Fablok (Chrzanów) and H. Cegielski (Poznań), 191 locomotives were delivered to the Polish State Railways (PKP).

Originally intended for suburban passenger traffic, the TKt48 proved underpowered for that task. However, with its high axle load and symmetrical tank configuration, it was ideal for handling mixed traffic on hilly routes—especially in regions like the Karkonosze and the Tatra foothills. Its maximum speed of 80 km/h in both directions and ease of maintenance made it a favorite among train crews.

The locomotive served well into the 1980s on regional passenger and light freight services. Many units were scrapped after retirement, but several have been preserved and are now museum pieces or operational on special steam excursions. The TKt48 remains an iconic symbol of Polish steam railway heritage.
