Description

Model of the express steam locomotive 310.21 „Gölsdorf Edition” in the livery of the kkStB

A model of the express tender steam locomotive 310.21 in the „Gölsdorf Edition” version, in the livery of the Imperial-Royal Austrian State Railways (kkStB). Class 310 is regarded as one of the most elegant and technically advanced locomotives of its era – a masterpiece of Austrian engineering. Its slender silhouette and exceptionally smooth running earned it the title of queen of the rails.

This is a collector's model in a special edition. Drive is provided on two tender axles and, via a cardan shaft, on all three driving axles of the locomotive. The model stands out for its finely detailed running gear, filigree valve gear, NEM finescale metal spoked wheels and opening smokebox doors.

Note: controlling and powering the model.

The model is produced in the digital (DC Digital) version with a factory-fitted decoder (NEM 652) and sound. To make full use of the running, sound and lighting functions, a digital DCC command station is required. If you also intend to run the model on analogue (direct-current) power, make sure that analogue mode is enabled in the decoder (bit 2 in CV29) – running the model on DC voltage with analogue mode switched off may damage the decoder. The model is not a starter set and does not include track or a controller.

Model railways – digital or analogue control?

A digital DCC system lets you control several locomotives independently on the same track at a constant rail voltage, whereas in an analogue system all vehicles on a given circuit respond simultaneously to changes in the supply voltage. The model described here is supplied in the digital version, with a factory-fitted decoder and sound, ready for operation on a DCC system.

About the class 310 steam locomotive (kkStB):

Class 310 of the Imperial-Royal Austrian State Railways (kkStB) is a family of express tender steam locomotives, regarded as one of the most elegant and technically demanding locomotives of its era – a true masterpiece of Austrian engineering. Between 1911 and 1916, 90 of them were built for express service on the Northern Railway, the Emperor Franz Joseph Railway and the Western Railway.

The locomotive was designed by Karl Gölsdorf. It was given a 1'C2' wheel arrangement and a four-cylinder compound superheated-steam engine; the design had to keep within the axle-load and length limits imposed by the infrastructure. Its distinctive, slender silhouette and exceptionally smooth running earned it the title of queen of the rails even back then. The model, in the „Gölsdorf Edition” version, reproduces the Era I condition.

Original technical data (class 310 steam locomotive, kkStB):

  • Type: express tender steam locomotive, 1'C2' wheel arrangement
  • Engine: four-cylinder compound, superheated steam
  • Designer: Karl Gölsdorf
  • Years of construction: 1911–1916; 90 built
  • Use: express trains (Northern Railway, Emperor Franz Joseph Railway, Western Railway)

  • Era: I

About the manufacturer – Roco:

Roco is an Austrian model railway manufacturer that has been operating since 1960, founded in Salzburg and today based in Bergheim near Salzburg as part of the Modelleisenbahn GmbH group (alongside the Fleischmann brand). It released its first locomotives in 1976 and earned its reputation early on through precision and fidelity to the prototype. The brand introduced a number of innovations to the industry, among them unshortened, true-to-length coaches, track with a lower rail profile, and snag-free close couplers. Roco's contemporary H0 models stand out for their rich detail, while the digital range is rounded out by the Z21 control system. Roco models are valued by modellers and collectors throughout Europe.
