About the RF-8A/G Crusader:

The RF-8 was a reconnaissance conversion of the F-8 Crusader fighter, one of the US Navy’s most important carrier aircraft of the 1960s. The RF-8A and later RF-8G were unarmed, fitted with multiple camera installations in the nose. They provided critical intelligence during the Vietnam War, often flying over heavily defended areas. The type remained in service until the 1980s, making the RF-8 one of the longest-serving Crusader variants.

Technical data of the original aircraft:

  • Length: 16.6 m
  • Wingspan: 10.9 m
  • Powerplant: 1 × Pratt & Whitney J57-P-420 engine, 72.8 kN with afterburner
  • Maximum speed: approx. 1,975 km/h (Mach 1.8)
  • Service ceiling: 16,000 m
  • Crew: 1 pilot
  • Equipment: photographic cameras installed in the nose
