Description
Plastic Model Kit of the Northrop HL-10 Research Vehicle in 1:72 Scale
AMP 72021 is a self-assembly model kit representing the experimental Northrop HL-10 technology demonstrator – one of five American “lifting body” aircraft flown at the NASA Flight Research Center between 1966 and 1975. These unusual designs had no conventional wings – lift was generated by the carefully shaped fuselage itself. The lifting body program played a key role in the later development of the Space Shuttle, as it allowed engineers to study how a spacecraft returning from orbit could safely maneuver and land. Despite the misleading “NL-10” designation sometimes used in the manufacturer’s marketing, the correct name of this vehicle is HL-10 (“Horizontal Lander, 10th configuration studied by the Langley Research Center”).
The model reproduces the characteristic lifting body shape: the broad rounded aerodynamic fuselage, the sculpted upper surface with a large pilot cockpit, and the three vertical stabilizers – one mounted centrally and two outward-canted fins on the sides. The real aircraft was powered by a four-chamber XLR11 rocket engine fueled by ethyl alcohol and liquid oxygen; during powered missions it was air-launched from a B-52 mothership.
Inside the box you will find:
- Plastic sprues with the lifting body fuselage and stabilizers
- Clear pilot canopy part
- Main and nose landing gear components
- Water-slide decal sheet
- Illustrated assembly instructions
Model technical details:
- Scale: 1:72
- Catalog number: 72021
- Manufacturer: AMP
- Finished model length: approx. 89 mm, width: approx. 58 mm
- Difficulty level: intermediate
Note: The kit does not include glue, paints, or modeling tools. The model requires assembly and painting.
Building the model:
The small number of parts and unusual wingless configuration make this kit attractive for modelers looking for a quick but visually distinctive project. It is worth spending extra time carefully finishing the fuselage seams – the smooth, rounded lifting body shape makes any imperfections highly visible along the surface joints. Experimental NASA vehicles from the 1960s were typically painted in glossy white with a satin finish, featuring prominent black anti-glare areas and red accents on the stabilizers. Recommended paints include white shades from the Tamiya, AK, or Mr. Hobby ranges. A gloss varnish is recommended before decal application to prevent decal silvering.
Essential tools:
- Modeling sprue cutters for removing parts from the sprues
- Modeling knife or scalpel
- Files and sandpaper for smoothing attachment points
- Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
- Modeling putty for finishing fuselage seams
- Paint brushes in various sizes
- Model paints (acrylic or enamel)
- Modeling wash for highlighting details
About the vehicle – Northrop HL-10:
The Northrop HL-10 was a wingless NASA research vehicle built by Northrop Corporation in 1966 as one of two “heavyweight” lifting body demonstrators (the other being the M2-F2). The “HL” designation stood for “Horizontal Landing,” while the number 10 referred to the tenth lifting body configuration studied by engineers at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. The vehicle was designed to validate the concept of safely maneuvering and landing a low lift-to-drag spacecraft intended for atmospheric reentry from space.
The HL-10 made its first flight on December 22, 1966, with pilot Bruce Peterson at the controls. During the research program, the aircraft completed 37 flights, achieving both the highest speed (Mach 1.861) and highest altitude (over 27,000 m) of all five American lifting body vehicles. The HL-10 was considered the best handling aircraft of the entire program. The only example built is now displayed at the entrance to NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Data gathered from HL-10 and related lifting body aircraft directly influenced the aerodynamic design of the later Space Shuttle.
Technical data of the original vehicle (Northrop HL-10):
- Length: 6.45 m
- Width: 4.15 m
- Height: 3.51 m
- Takeoff weight with pilot: approx. 2,750 kg
- Crew: 1 pilot
- Powerplant: four-chamber XLR11 rocket engine, thrust approx. 27 kN
- Fuel: ethyl alcohol and liquid oxygen
- Maximum speed: Mach 1.861 (achieved on February 18, 1970)
- Maximum altitude: approx. 27,500 m
- Total flights: 37
- Production: 1 aircraft built
About the manufacturer – AMP:
AMP (Aircraft Model Production) is a manufacturer specializing in plastic model kits of rare aviation subjects – experimental aircraft, research vehicles, prototypes, and unusual variants of well-known designs. The company produces kits in 1:48 and 1:72 scales using short-run manufacturing technology, with a strong focus on accurately reproducing the shapes of rarely modeled aircraft. AMP kits are especially popular among collectors seeking subjects unavailable from large mainstream manufacturers. The company’s catalog includes aircraft from the American lifting body program, experimental helicopters, and early jet aircraft from the 1940s and 1950s.
