Description

Desert Eagle pistol self-assembly model – Academy 4D Kit

Academy 15409 depicts the Desert Eagle, a large-calibre semi-automatic pistol whose official manufacturer designation appears today as often in firearms literature as it does in popular culture. Its distinctive angular shape, with a long slide and high sights, makes the finished model recognisable from across the room.

The kit belongs to the 4D Kit series, in which the parts snap together without glue. The parts are coloured at the factory, so painting is not required and the assembled model is ready for display straight away. Kits in this series usually contain around 20 to 40 parts, which means a very low difficulty level and a short build. The manufacturer recommends it from age 8.

What's in the box:

  • Coloured plastic parts
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: not specified by the manufacturer
  • Product code: 15409
  • Manufacturer: Academy
  • Series: 4D Kit
  • Age: 8 and up
  • Difficulty level: beginner

Please note: this is a self-assembly model. Paints and modelling tools are not included.

Building the model:

Assembly relies on snap-fit connections and needs no glue. On a firearm model it is worth paying attention to the edges of the slide and frame – these are long, straight lines where any leftover gate mark shows clearly, so a moment with a file makes a real difference.

If you wish, the model can be taken further: a dark wash in the slide serrations and on the checkered surfaces will emphasise the texture, and hand-painting the front and rear sights or the grip panels adds contrast. These are optional suggestions – the kit is complete without any painting.

Tools you will need:

  • Modelling nippers for removing parts from the sprues
  • A hobby knife or scalpel
  • A file or sanding paper to smooth the gate marks
  • Optional: model paints, brushes and a wash, for builders who want to add their own painting

About the pistol – Desert Eagle:

The Desert Eagle is a large-calibre semi-automatic pistol developed in the United States and produced by, among others, Israel Military Industries and Magnum Research. It was designed around high-energy revolver cartridges, which called for solutions unusual in a handgun.

Instead of the short-recoil action typical of pistols, the design uses gas operation with a rotating bolt – an arrangement borrowed from long guns. This allows the weapon to handle pressures a conventional pistol design could not, while also giving it its characteristically large and heavy silhouette.

The Desert Eagle has been offered in .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum and .50 Action Express. Beyond sport shooting and collecting, it gained wide recognition through appearances in films and video games, making it one of the most frequently depicted pistols in popular culture.

Original specifications (Desert Eagle .50 AE):

  • Type: large-calibre semi-automatic pistol
  • Country of development: United States
  • Manufacturers: Israel Military Industries, Magnum Research
  • Operating principle: gas operated, rotating bolt lock-up
  • Calibres: .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, .50 Action Express
  • Weight: approx. 2 kg (.50 AE version)
  • Overall length: approx. 269 mm

About the manufacturer – Academy:

Academy Plastic Model is a Korean manufacturer of assembly kits, in business since 1969. Its catalogue covers aircraft, ships, armour and civilian vehicles in the popular modelling scales, along with educational sets and simple kits aimed at younger builders. The brand is known for its broad range of Korean subjects – both modern Republic of Korea military hardware and cars from that market. Academy mouldings feature crisp engraved detail and good part fit, and the instructions are illustrated step by step, which helps less experienced modellers. A separate part of the catalogue consists of series with factory-coloured parts and snap-fit assembly, including the 4D Kit line. Academy kits are sold worldwide and have long been among the most widely chosen sets in the affordable segment.
