Description
Digital TKt48 tank locomotive model in Polish State Railways livery
A digital model of the TKt48 tank locomotive — one of the two great post-war designs of the Polish steam locomotive industry. A heavy, versatile machine that for decades hauled passenger and freight trains across the Podhale region, the Sudetes and the Beskids. The model was produced in H0 scale within the PIKO Expert range and comes with a factory-fitted sound decoder and smoke generator.
The model reproduces the variant with smoke deflectors, typical of the era IV period. The finish includes cast wheels, delicately rendered brake rigging and glazing in the cab windows, through which the detailed interior is visible. The outline of a heavy tank engine with its long boiler and distinctive wheel arrangement makes a strong impression on a layout, especially at the head of a passenger train made up of coaches from the same period. The factory-fitted PIKO sound decoder controls the cab and running gear lighting and the firebox flicker, while the built-in smoke generator completes the picture of a working steam locomotive.

Please note: a DCC command station and powered track are required to operate this model.
The model is not a starter set and does not include track or a controller. To use all the digital functions — sound and independent lighting control — a DCC command station is required (for example the PIKO SmartControl or any other DCC-compatible controller) connected to powered track. The model can also be run on a conventional analogue DC layout, but only provided that the decoder has the alternative power source function enabled (analogue operation — controlled in the DCC standard by bit 2 of register CV29). It is active by default, but if it has previously been switched off, applying DC to the track may damage the decoder. In analogue mode only basic running is available — without sound or digital functions.
Model railways – digital or analogue control?
The digital DCC control system allows several locomotives to run independently on the same track. Each vehicle receives individual commands while the rail voltage stays constant, which makes realistic operation possible and allows the lights and sound effects of every locomotive to be controlled separately. In an analogue system all vehicles on a given circuit are controlled at once by varying the supply voltage. PIKO model 50765 has a factory-fitted sound decoder and is intended above all for digital operation.
About the TKt48:
The TKt48 is one of the two great post-war Polish steam designs, alongside the Pt47 express engine. It was developed at the Central Design Office of the Rolling Stock Industry as a universal, heavy tank engine for passenger and freight work on lines with closely spaced stops, where not having to turn the locomotive at the terminus was a major operational advantage. Production began in 1950 at Fablok in Chrzanów and at the H. Cegielski works in Poznań.
By 1957, 199 engines had been built, of which 191 went to PKP; six were delivered to the Albanian railways and two to the coal industry. They were the heaviest Polish tank engines — 98 t in service, boilers pressed to 16 at, cylinders of 500 × 700 mm and driving wheels 1,450 mm in diameter. The 2-8-4T layout, with a Krauss-Helmholtz bogie at the front and a two-axle bogie at the rear, allowed the full 80 km/h in either direction, making them ideal for push-pull work.
Initially allocated to Warsaw, they soon spread across the network, and mountain and foothill lines became their natural habitat — the sheds of Kraków, Wrocław, Katowice and Nowy Sącz. Crews valued them for good adhesion and a steady ride, and railwaymen nicknamed them tekałka, osiołek and uszatek. In 1990 some 75 were still in service, and the last regular trains ran around 1991–1992. Several dozen survive as museum exhibits and monuments, among them TKt48-191 at the Railway Rolling Stock Heritage Park in Chabówka.
