Copper State Models is a 3D-printed self-assembly model of the American Model J military motorcycle of 1916-1918 in 1:35 scale. This heavy V-twin motorcycle was one of the symbols of American military motoring of the First World War.

The small 3D-printed parts reproduce the engine, drive and fittings with detail unobtainable in injection moulding.

Note: the kit does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

The model requires careful separation of the small parts from the print plates and cleaning of any print-support marks. The resin parts are joined with cyanoacrylate glue. Because of the delicacy of the parts we recommend it to intermediate modellers.

For painting the military version, colours typical of American vehicles of the First World War are recommended - olive drab or a grey-green shade, with metallic accents on the engine and drive components and brown on the leather saddle. Picking out the detail with a wash will emphasise the V-twin engine.

Required tools:

• Hobby knife or scalpel and nippers to separate the parts from the print plates
• Files and sandpaper to clean off print-support marks
• Cyanoacrylate glue (for resin / 3D-printed parts)
• Brushes of various sizes or an airbrush
• Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
• A wash to pick out the detail
• Optional: pigments for a dust or mud effect

The American Model J (historically the Harley-Davidson Model J) was one of the most important heavy military motorcycles of the First World War. It was powered by a V-twin engine of the IOE type with a capacity of about 989 cc and an output of around 11 hp. After the United States entered the war in 1917, American heavy motorcycles - solo and with sidecars - reached the front in large numbers.

These machines were used to carry dispatches, for escort and reconnaissance, and - in sidecar versions - to transport supplies and weapons. Its powerful, reliable engine made the Model J one of the symbols of American military motoring of the time.
