Description

Plastic model kit of the Yokosuka MXY7-K1 Ohka training glider in 1:48 scale

Fine Molds FC07 represents the training variant of the Japanese Ohka flying bomb – the unpowered MXY7-K1 trainer glider. This aircraft was used to prepare pilots for the difficult one-way mission in the combat Ohka, reproducing the gliding and approach characteristics but without rocket power and without a warhead.

In place of the engines and explosive charge, the K1 was fitted with water-ballast tanks that brought its weight and handling close to those of a fully loaded Ohka, and a skid that allowed the glider to land and be reused. The model is a 2025 reissue based on the Fine Molds tooling, with fine engraved detail on the fuselage, wings and tail surfaces and a reproduced cockpit.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with fuselage, wing and tail components
  • Waterslide decal sheet for training-unit markings
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:48
  • Catalogue number: FC07
  • Manufacturer: Fine Molds
  • Assembled length: approx. 126 mm, wingspan: approx. 107 mm
  • Difficulty level: beginner/intermediate

Note: This kit does not include cement, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Assembly:

This is a small kit with a modest parts count, suitable also for less experienced modellers. It is worth painting and finishing the cockpit before joining the fuselage halves, since access is limited once it is closed. Small parts such as the landing skid call for careful cutting and precise tweezers.

Training aircraft were often painted for high visibility – depending on the chosen scheme you can reach for the characteristic orange of Japanese trainers or for IJN greys, according to the markings of the particular unit. Decals are best applied over a gloss coat to avoid silvering, with a satin coat as the final finish. Exact paint codes are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Required tools:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Modelling knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for cleaning up sprue gate marks
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Precise modelling tweezers
  • Brushes of various sizes
  • Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • A wash to emphasise detail

About the aircraft – Yokosuka MXY7-K1 Ohka (training version):

The combat Ohka was a single-use weapon in which the pilot had only one chance to guide the aircraft onto its target. To prepare pilots for this mission, the unpowered MXY7-K1 trainer was developed, reproducing the most demanding phase of flight – the glide and approach – in a way that allowed safe, repeatable practice.

Unlike the combat aircraft, the K1 had no rocket motors and no warhead. In their place it carried water-ballast tanks, so that during the first phase of flight the glider behaved much like a fully loaded Ohka; the ballast was released before landing to reduce approach speed. Landing was made on a skid, allowing the same airframe to be used repeatedly.

The training version was part of a wider programme to prepare pilots for Ohka operations in the final phase of the Pacific war. For modellers it is an interesting, less obvious complement to the subject, pairing well with a model of the combat Ohka and of the mother aircraft.

Original aircraft specifications (MXY7-K1, training version):

  • Length: approx. 6.07 m
  • Wingspan: approx. 5.12 m
  • Powerplant: none (unpowered training glider)
  • Ballast: water tanks replacing the warhead and motors
  • Undercarriage: landing skid
  • Crew: 1
  • Role: training Ohka pilots in the glide and approach

About the manufacturer – Fine Molds:

Fine Molds is a Japanese model company valued above all for highly accurate kits of Japanese aircraft and weapons of World War II. The brand stands out for its fine surface engraving, precise rendering of detail and carefully developed tooling. Beyond Japanese subjects, Fine Molds also offers kits of modern jet aircraft such as the F-4 Phantom II, F-14 Tomcat and F-15 Eagle, as well as ranges of military figures. For many years the company held the official licence for models from the Star Wars universe, giving it recognition far beyond the scale-modelling community. Fine Molds kits are aimed mainly at modellers who value fidelity and build quality.
