Description

1:35 scale plastic set of British Type 1942 (5 gal / 20 l) jerry cans

Gecko Models 35GM0158 is a self-assembly set reproducing the British Type 1942 5-gallon (20-litre) jerry cans. Pressed from steel sheet, fitted with three handles and reinforced edges, they were a durable and practical successor to the unreliable "flimsies". The value-pack version contains a large number of cans, letting you fill a scene effectively.

The characteristic shape – flat sides with pressed ribs, three handles and an interlocking edge system – is clearly reproduced. In 1:35 the set sits naturally alongside vehicles, trucks and figures, adding authenticity to a scene.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic parts with a large number of jerry cans (value pack)
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Catalogue number: 35GM0158
  • Manufacturer: Gecko Models
  • Skill level: beginner

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

Assembly is very simple and approachable for beginners. When painting it is worth varying the individual cans in wear, dirt and shade – this gives the scene a natural look. Khaki, olive and sand tones are typical, with markings indicating the type of contents; details and edges can be emphasised with a wash, and scuffs and dust achieved with pigments.

Tools you will need:

  • Modelling side cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for smoothing sprue-gate marks
  • Plastic cement
  • Brushes of various sizes
  • Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • A wash and pigments for wear and dust effects

About the cans – the 1942 pattern:

The Type 1942 fuel can was the British and Allied counterpart of the German "jerry can", whose design was considered successful enough to serve as a model for their own solution. Unlike the earlier "flimsies", the 1942-pattern can had a reinforced structure and a reliable sealing system, which significantly reduced leakage and fuel evaporation.

Three handles allowed the can to be carried singly or in pairs, while the flat sides and interlocking edge system made it easy to stack safely in vehicles. These cans became one of the pillars of fuel logistics, and thanks to their durability many remained in use long after the war.

About the manufacturer – Gecko Models:
