Great Wall Hobby L4836 is a construction kit representing the single-seat F-16CM Block 50 in US Air Force service. The CM designation applies to Block 40/42/50/52 aircraft that have passed through the CCIP upgrade programme, which standardised avionics configuration and expanded precision weapons capability. Block 50, powered by the General Electric F110-GE-129, is the principal USAF variant used in the suppression of enemy air defences role.

The kit is based on completely new tooling created by Great Wall Hobby in 2026 as part of the brand's new 1:48 F-16 family. In addition to the plastic sprues the box contains clear parts, a photo-etched fret and painting masks, while the decal sheet covers four marking options.

Building the model:

This kit is aimed at modellers with some experience behind them: new tooling does mean excellent fit and finely engraved panel lines, but the part count, the photo-etched components and the well-appointed cockpit call for care and patience. Painting and assembling the cockpit with its seat and instrument panel before closing the fuselage is advisable. Working with photo-etched parts is easier with precision tweezers and cyanoacrylate glue, and the supplied masks noticeably shorten canopy preparation before painting.

Modern USAF F-16s wear a low-visibility scheme of two grey tones — lighter on the undersides and fuselage sides, darker on the spine — with matt, low-contrast markings. Exact paint codes are given in the instructions. Decals, of which modern fighter schemes carry an exceptional number (stencilling covers almost the entire airframe), are best applied over a gloss coat, which reduces the risk of silvering. A satin or matt varnish makes a suitable final coat, and a subtle wash helps emphasise the panel lines without over-weathering the aircraft.

About the aircraft – General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon:

The F-16 was developed in the 1970s as a lightweight day fighter intended to complement the heavy and expensive F-15. Its designers adopted solutions considered bold at the time: fly-by-wire controls with no mechanical linkage to the control surfaces, a relaxed-stability airframe delivering exceptional agility, a reclined ejection seat helping the pilot cope with high g-loads, and a bubble canopy giving outstanding all-round visibility. The aircraft entered service in 1979 and quickly became one of the most widely operated fighters in the world.

Successive production blocks steadily expanded its capabilities: from the purely air-to-air F-16A, through the F-16C with expanded avionics and beyond-visual-range capability, to the Block 40/42 configured for night operations and the Block 50/52 with more powerful engines. The CCIP programme, run from the early 2000s, standardised cockpit and weapons system configuration across the USAF fleet, with upgraded aircraft redesignated F-16CM and F-16DM.

Block 50 with the General Electric F110-GE-129 became the backbone of American squadrons specialising in the suppression of enemy air defences. For this role the aircraft carry the AN/ASQ-213 HTS pod, which detects and locates radar emitters, together with AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missiles. Crews flying F-16s in this configuration undertake some of the most demanding and hazardous missions in modern tactical aviation.
