Description

Plastic model kit of the Mitsubishi F1M2 “Pete” Model 11 seaplane (Battleship Yamato) in 1:48 scale

Hasegawa 07563 is a kit for self-assembly representing the Japanese observation biplane floatplane Mitsubishi F1M2 Type Zero, known by the Allied code name “Pete”. Aircraft of this type were used for observation, spotting for naval gunfire and patrol work, launched by catapult from large warships.

This edition represents the floatplanes carried aboard the battleship Yamato and includes parts to build the model in its later version. A new decal sheet is provided for four aircraft: “241-01” and “241-02” from Yamato (May 1944) and “242-01” and “242-02” from the battleship Musashi (January 1944).

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with airframe, float and engine parts
  • Clear parts for the cabin glazing
  • Parts for the later version
  • Waterslide decal sheet for 4 marking options (Yamato and Musashi)
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Specifications:

  • Scale: 1:48
  • Catalogue number: 07563
  • Manufacturer: Hasegawa
  • Assembled length: approx. 198 mm, wingspan: approx. 229 mm
  • Difficulty level: intermediate

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Assembly:

As a biplane the model calls for careful alignment of the wings and for reproducing the rigging, which is worth planning before assembly. The cockpit and interior are best painted before the fuselage is closed. The central main float and the underwing floats, which define the aircraft's distinctive silhouette, also call for care.

For the 1944 aircraft a dark green on the upper surfaces and a light underside are recommended; the instructions provide paint suggestions for each option. Decals are best applied over a gloss coat, and the model finished with a satin varnish, with the detail emphasised using a wash.

Tools required:

  • Modelling nippers for removing parts from the sprues
  • Modelling knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for cleaning up sprue-gate marks
  • Plastic cement
  • Brushes in various sizes
  • Modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • A wash to bring out the detail
  • Thread or rigging line (to reproduce the biplane rigging)

About the aircraft – Mitsubishi F1M “Pete”:

The Mitsubishi F1M is a Japanese observation biplane floatplane that entered service in the early 1940s. Originally intended for observation and spotting for naval gunfire, it proved to be a versatile design.

In practice the F1M was also used for maritime patrol, anti-submarine work, rescue and transport duties, and occasionally even for air combat. The aircraft were launched by catapult from battleships, cruisers and seaplane tenders.

The battleship Yamato, like her sister Musashi, carried several floatplanes aft, including the F1M, handled by catapults and a crane. These aircraft were responsible for observation and reconnaissance within the ship's operating range.

Original aircraft specifications (Mitsubishi F1M2):

  • Crew: 2
  • Powerplant: a Mitsubishi Zuisei radial engine of approx. 875 hp
  • Wingspan: 11.00 m
  • Length: 9.50 m
  • Maximum speed: approx. 370 km/h
  • Armament: machine guns and a small bomb load
