Description

3D-printed wheel set for the MiG-29 Fulcrum (Hobby 2000) in 1:48 scale

Hobby 2000 90016 is a set of landing gear wheels for 1:48 scale models of the MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter from the Hobby 2000 range. The parts are produced by 3D printing in resin, giving clean, sharp detail with no mould parting lines and no ejector pin marks.

The MiG-29 has substantial, highly visible landing gear wheels with a distinctive tread pattern, designed for operations from unprepared airfields. They are among the first parts a viewer notices, and replacing them with 3D-printed items clearly raises the detail level of the finished model.

3D-printed resin parts - detail beyond the reach of injection moulding

Resin 3D printing reproduces shapes injection moulds cannot deliver: full tread around the entire tyre, crisp rim edges, small openings and surface textures. Each part leaves the printer as a single finished piece, with no parting lines to sand away.

Resin parts are best removed from their printing supports with a razor saw or sharp knife, and the remaining nubs cleaned up with a file and sanding paper. Washing the parts in lukewarm soapy water before painting removes any printing residue. Resin does not bond with plastic cement - use cyanoacrylate glue instead.

About the aircraft - MiG-29 Fulcrum:

The MiG-29 is a Soviet fourth-generation air superiority fighter developed by the Mikoyan design bureau in response to the American F-15 and F-16. The prototype first flew on 6 October 1977 and the type entered front-line service in 1983. Its distinctive layout - two widely spaced engines, intakes beneath the centre wing section and twin vertical tails - made the MiG-29 one of the most recognisable aircraft of the late Cold War.

The aircraft was designed to operate from field airstrips and poorly prepared runways, hence its rugged landing gear and the intake covers that protect the engines from foreign object ingestion. Outstanding agility, a helmet-mounted sight and the highly manoeuvrable R-73 missile made the MiG-29 a formidable opponent in close-in dogfighting.

The MiG-29 has served in dozens of countries worldwide. After German reunification, former East German aircraft passed to the Luftwaffe, where they underwent detailed comparative trials against Western fighters. In Poland the MiG-29 formed the backbone of the fighter force for many years.
