Analog or digital control – what to choose?

The key advantage of digital control systems is the ability to independently operate multiple locomotives on the same track. With analog control, all locomotives on a shared section will move simultaneously, as the system works by varying the voltage on the rails.

Running several analog trains independently requires complex wiring with isolated track sections and multiple controllers. In contrast, digital systems maintain constant voltage in the rails and control each locomotive individually via digital signals sent from a command station.

About the TKt48 locomotive:

The TKt48 is a Polish steam tank locomotive developed after World War II for use on local and mountainous railway lines. Produced between 1950 and 1957 by Fablok (Chrzanów) and H. Cegielski (Poznań), a total of 191 units were delivered to the Polish State Railways (PKP).

Originally designed for suburban passenger traffic, the TKt48 turned out to be underpowered for that task. However, its high adhesive weight and bidirectional capability made it ideal for operations on hilly and mountainous terrain. It was widely used in regions such as the Karkonosze and Podhale, hauling both local passenger trains and light freight consists. With a maximum speed of 80 km/h in either direction, it became a versatile and reliable workhorse.

The locomotive’s compact design, symmetrical configuration, and ease of maintenance made it popular among train crews. As traffic volumes decreased and branch lines were gradually closed, the TKt48 was withdrawn from regular service by the late 1980s. Fortunately, several examples have been preserved as museum pieces and are still operational during heritage events. Today, the TKt48 remains a symbol of post-war Polish steam engineering and railway history.
