A set of two modern PKP Intercity coaches: the second class type 111Ah and the first class type 112Ag. Both belong to the longest-running series of passenger coaches in PKP history, based on the UIC-Y standard, and still form the backbone of long-distance formations. PIKO has produced new tooling for them in H0 scale.

The set stands out for careful paintwork and sharp printing, clear windows and harmoniously finished interiors. Accurate dimensions, precisely engraved bogies and good running qualities allow realistic era VI express formations to be made up. Both coaches are prepared for straightforward retrofitting of interior lighting.

Please note: this model is not a starter set — a locomotive and powered track are required.

The wagon model does not include track, a locomotive or a controller. To put it into service you need powered track and a locomotive — analogue or digital. The wagon itself has no drive or electronics, so it behaves the same way on analogue DC track as in a digitally controlled DCC layout. The retrofit kits listed in the specifications, such as interior lighting, are sold separately and are not part of this product.

Model railways – digital or analogue control?

The digital DCC control system allows several locomotives to run independently on the same track. Each vehicle receives individual commands while the rail voltage stays constant, which makes realistic operation possible and allows the lights and sound effects of every locomotive to be controlled separately. In an analogue system all vehicles on a given circuit are controlled at once by varying the supply voltage. PIKO model 28336 is an unpowered wagon without electronics, so it can be marshalled into trains hauled in either analogue or digital operation.

About the type 111A and 112A coaches:

The 111A and 112A family is the Polish implementation of the UIC-Y standard and the longest-running series of passenger coaches in PKP history — more than two thousand vehicles in total. They were built by two works, H. Cegielski in Poznań and Pafawag in Wrocław, between 1969 and 1992. The design is a classic compartment coach with a side corridor, on two two-axle bogies of the 4AN and GP200 families.

The 111Ah is a second class coach: ten compartments of eight seats each, eighty seats in all. This variant was built in a run of 538 between 1979 and 1986, on 4ANc bogies cleared for high speeds, with both steam and electric heating. The 112Ag is the first class equivalent: nine compartments of six armchairs each, 54 seats in all. It was the most numerous variant of the whole 112A family — 669 vehicles built between 1978 and 1984.

A significant part of this stock remains in PKP Intercity service today after successive modernisation programmes. A pair of first and second class coaches is the basic building block of an era VI long-distance formation — and the simplest way to build a convincing rake behind a modern electric locomotive on a layout.
