About the caboose:

The caboose is a characteristic American service car coupled to the end of a freight train. For decades it served as a mobile workplace for the conductor and brakemen: it was used to observe the train while running, to supervise the load and as a place for the crew to rest on long journeys. Many cabooses were fitted with an observation cupola from which the whole train could be watched.

The caboose's distinctive silhouette made it one of the most recognisable symbols of American railroading.
