Description

Model of an American Union Pacific caboose

A ready-to-run model of an American caboose of the Union Pacific railroad with car number 25827, in G scale. PIKO has reproduced this characteristic vehicle in the original livery of Union Pacific – one of the largest freight railroads in the United States – giving an American freight train its recognisable, complete appearance.

The model stands out with its detailed execution and crisp printing of the Union Pacific colours and lettering. The wagon has working tail lights, and the interior can be illuminated by fitting the separately available interior lighting set no. 36136. The robust, weather-resistant construction typical of PIKO garden railways allows year-round outdoor running.

About the caboose:

The caboose is a characteristic American service car coupled to the end of a freight train. For decades it served as a mobile workplace for the conductor and brakemen: it was used to observe the train while running, to supervise the load and as a place for the crew to rest on long journeys. Many cabooses were fitted with an observation cupola from which the whole train could be watched.

The caboose's distinctive silhouette made it one of the most recognisable symbols of American railroading. In garden railway modelling it is practically a must as the finishing touch to a freight train – the Union Pacific example reproduced here, car number 25827, gives a train a complete, authentic character.
