Description

Model of a set of two IC 2000 double-deck passenger coaches (second class) in the livery of the Swiss Federal Railways

A set of two double-deck second-class passenger coaches of type B from the IC 2000 family of the Swiss Federal Railways – the first nationwide Swiss double-deck long-distance train. This is the set designated as the second series; together with set cat. no. 6200216, which differs in its running numbers, it allows you to make up a longer train without repeating numbers. The models reproduce the Era V–VI condition.

Both coaches have a fully fitted interior and the IC 2000 family’s characteristic double-deck silhouette, with the inter-car gangway routed along the upper deck. Fine body detail and accurate printing underline the character of the prototype.

Model specifications:

  • Scale: H0 (1:87)
  • Catalogue number: 6200217
  • Manufacturer: Roco
  • Set composition: two double-deck second-class coaches (type B)
  • Set length: 616 mm
  • Era: V–VI
  • Operator: Swiss Federal Railways (SBB)
  • Power system: direct current DC (two-rail)
  • Coupler: NEM 362 standard with close-coupling kinematics
  • Fitted interior: yes
  • Interior lighting: retrofittable (kit cat. no. 4000005)
  • Companion set with different running numbers: cat. no. 6200216
  • Models painted and ready to run
  • Recommended age: 14 years and over

Note: this model consists of hauled coaches – a locomotive and a powered track are needed to run it.

The set is not a starter set and does not include track or a controller. The coaches are hauled by a locomotive (in prototype service, IC 2000 trains are usually worked by a Re 460 locomotive in push-pull mode). The model is produced in the DC version; for operation on a three-rail AC (Märklin) system the manufacturer offers replacement AC wheelsets cat. no. 40196. The interior lighting can be retrofitted using kit cat. no. 4000005.

Model railways – digital or analogue control?

A digital DCC system lets you control several locomotives independently on the same track at a constant rail voltage, whereas in an analogue system all vehicles on a given circuit respond simultaneously to changes in the supply voltage. The model described here is a hauled vehicle – it has no drive or decoder of its own, so it runs equally well on digitally (DCC) controlled and analogue layouts, since the control method applies only to the locomotive. The model is produced in the DC (two-rail) version.

About the SBB IC 2000 trains:

The IC 2000 are double-deck long-distance coaches of the Swiss Federal Railways, introduced as the first nationwide Swiss double-deck train. They were created to increase train capacity on the busiest routes while using the existing infrastructure. A total of 341 coaches were delivered between 1997 and 2004, built by a consortium of Schindler Waggon (later Bombardier Transportation) and Alstom; they are approved for 200 km/h.

IC 2000 trains operate in push-pull mode, usually with a Re 460 locomotive, and serve connections between Switzerland’s main cities. What sets them apart from other European double-deck coaches is the inter-car gangway routed along the upper deck. The fleet comprised several coach types (including Bt, B, BR, A and AD), and the distinctive livery was designed by the Pininfarina studio. Between 2019 and 2024 the fleet underwent a mid-life refurbishment.

Original technical data (IC 2000):

About the manufacturer – Roco:

Roco is an Austrian model railway manufacturer that has been operating since 1960, founded in Salzburg and today based in Bergheim near Salzburg as part of the Modelleisenbahn GmbH group (alongside the Fleischmann brand). It released its first locomotives in 1976 and earned its reputation early on through precision and fidelity to the prototype. The brand introduced a number of innovations to the industry, among them unshortened, true-to-length coaches, track with a lower rail profile, and snag-free close couplers. Roco's contemporary H0 models stand out for their rich detail, while the digital range is rounded out by the Z21 control system. Roco models are valued by modellers and collectors throughout Europe.
