Resin accessories for models – detail beyond injection moulding

Resin parts are cast in silicone moulds, free of the draft and undercut limits that injection moulding imposes. That allows deep undercuts, freely hanging folds and fine fabric texture – exactly what is hardest to obtain from a styrene sprue. Soft, crumpled material resting on hard armour plate is one of the most effective texture contrasts you can add to a vehicle model.

Preparation is straightforward: trim the casting block with a razor saw or a sharp knife, smooth the cut with abrasive paper, and wash the parts in lukewarm water with a little detergent to remove any mould release residue. A primer coat before painting is recommended, and cyanoacrylate glue works well for mounting the parts. When painting, the double-sided camouflage of the original is worth exploiting – the lighter and darker faces let you vary the tones across the visible folds.

The Zeltbahn M1931 was a triangular shelter quarter introduced in the Reichswehr in 1931 and used by the German army throughout the Second World War. It was made of treated cotton, printed on both sides in Splittertarnmuster camouflage – one side lighter, the other darker, so the appearance could be matched to season and surroundings.

It was a multi-purpose item. With the head opening in the centre it served as a rain poncho. Four quarters buttoned together formed a tent for four soldiers, while larger combinations allowed eight- and sixteen-man tents to be built. Beyond that it was used as ground sheet, improvised stretcher and equipment cover.

On armour models, folded Zeltbahn sheets and canvas covers protecting the barrel and mantlet from dust and moisture are typical additions made for realism. Arranged on fenders, turret baskets or side armour, they create the impression of a vehicle in everyday field use.
