Resin accessories in small scale – detail beyond injection moulding

The silicone moulds used for resin casting are free of the draft limits imposed by injection moulding. That makes it possible to keep crisp fold edges and the fine texture of treated fabric even on parts a few millimetres across. The Zeltbahn M1931 was a triangular shelter quarter adopted by the Reichswehr in 1931 and retained by the German army until the end of the Second World War. It was made of treated cotton printed on both sides in Splittertarnmuster camouflage – one face came out lighter, the other darker, giving the soldier a choice according to season and terrain.

The design was multi-purpose from the outset. A head opening in the centre turned the sheet into a rain poncho, four quarters buttoned together made a tent for four soldiers, and combining more pieces allowed eight- and sixteen-man tents to be erected. Beyond that the Zeltbahn served as a ground sheet, an improvised stretcher and an equipment cover.

On armour models, folded sheets and canvas covers protecting the barrel and mantlet from dust and moisture are one of the classic ways of showing that a vehicle is in daily service rather than parked in a factory yard.
