Description

T-Model photo-etched structure set for the 48 t / 50 t Ssys / SSkra flatcar in 1:35

T-Model TK35003 is a photo-etched fret for upgrading 1:35 models of the German four-axle 48 t / 50 t Ssys / SSkra flatcar produced by T-Model. The set covers structural elements of the frame and the side sills — the parts that decide whether the finished car reads as heavy and blocky or light and true to the prototype.

Thin metal sheet allows those load-bearing profiles to be reproduced close to scale thickness, with crisp edges and clearly defined pressings. It is a solution for modellers who want to raise the level of detail on the car, particularly when the flatcar is displayed unloaded and its whole structure remains in view.

What's in the box:

  • Photo-etched fret with structural elements of the car's frame and side sills

Set specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Catalogue number: TK35003
  • Manufacturer: T-Model
  • Intended for: T-Model 1:35 models of the 50 t Ssys and 48 t SSkra „Köln" flatcars
  • Type: photo-etched detail set
  • Material: photo-etched metal fret

Photo-etched parts – realistic thickness for structural detail

Photo-etched parts are cut chemically from a thin metal sheet. The artwork is transferred onto a light-sensitive coating and an etching bath removes the metal outside the outlines, leaving detail of a thickness that injection moulding cannot reach. This is why lattice work, platforms, steps, grab handles and mesh are made this way — moulded in plastic they would have to be several times thicker for the mould to fill at all.

Parts are separated from the fret with a modelling knife, with the fret resting on a hard, smooth surface such as glass or a metal plate. The remaining tab can be filed away with a fine file. Folds are easiest to make with a photo-etch bending tool, though for straight lines a metal ruler and a razor blade pressed along the fold line works well.

For assembly we suggest cyanoacrylate glue applied in small amounts with a fine tool; for larger sub-assemblies, modellers with the relevant experience may prefer soldering, which produces a very rigid joint. Degreasing the metal and using a primer intended for metal before painting is usually enough to keep the paint secure, including on the folded areas.

About the prototype – Ssys / SSkra „Köln":

The four-axle Ssys rated at 50 tons and the SSkra „Köln" rated at 48 tons were among the most characteristic wartime rolling stock of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. They handled the day-to-day rail movement of German medium armour: the Pz.Kpfw. III and Pz.Kpfw. IV and the StuG assault guns built on their chassis.

Cars of this family also carried anti-aircraft artillery and tractors, and some were converted into improvised air defence positions, with an 8.8 cm Flak 36 mounted on the deck behind drop sides. Flatcars adapted this way were attached to military transports and armoured trains, which makes the Ssys a rewarding subject both as a means of transport and as a diorama piece in its own right.

Prototype specifications (Ssys / SSkra „Köln"):

  • Type: four-axle heavy flatcar
  • Operator: Deutsche Reichsbahn
  • Capacity: 50 t (Ssys), 48 t (SSkra „Köln")
  • Axle arrangement: four axles
  • Typical loads: Pz.Kpfw. III, Pz.Kpfw. IV, StuG assault guns, anti-aircraft guns
  • Secondary use: basis for improvised anti-aircraft wagons with the 8.8 cm Flak 36

About the manufacturer – T-Model:

T-Model is a Chinese manufacturer of scale models and modelling accessories based in Beijing. The brand concentrates on 1:72 and 1:35, with a range built mainly around modern American vehicles and German World War II railway rolling stock. Besides plastic kits, T-Model produces accessories for its own releases: photo-etched parts, thin wooden decks, masks and decals, so a railway car and its upgrades can be sourced from a single brand.
