Description

Tamiya waterslide decals with German insignia for 1:35 scale figures (vol. 2)

Tamiya 12641 is a sheet of waterslide decals with German WWII insignia intended for figures in 1:35 scale. The set covers Afrika Korps markings, field police (Feldgendarmerie) markings and Waffen-SS markings, and the included guide shows where each marking belongs on the uniform.

Note that these are markings for figures, not for vehicles — they represent patches, unit markings and insignia worn on the uniform. The set is the second volume of the Tamiya insignia series; volume one, product number 12625, covers 1:16 and 1:35 scales.

Waterslide insignia decals — crisp markings without brush painting

Waterslide decals are thin printed markings on a carrier film, supplied on a backing paper. After a short soak in water the decal releases from the backing and can be slid onto the model surface, where it dries into place. On 1:35 figures this delivers small, legible unit markings that would be very difficult to paint by hand.

For the best result, it is worth applying the decals over a smooth, gloss-coated surface — this reduces the risk of silvering. Decal softening solutions help the film settle into the folds and edges of the uniform. Once dry, a matt coat blends the marking into the finish of the figure. This is a suggested sequence rather than a rule — the final technique is up to the modeller.

About the insignia — giving a 1:35 figure an identity

Rank, unit and award markings are exactly the kind of detail that is hard to reproduce with a brush in 1:35 scale. Decals let you give a figure a specific identity and assign it to a particular formation, instead of leaving it an anonymous soldier in uniform.

The set covers three thematic areas: the Afrika Korps — German units fighting in North Africa, the field police (Feldgendarmerie) responsible for order behind the front line, and the Waffen-SS. One sheet therefore serves figures from very different scenes, from a desert diorama to actions on the European front.
