Description

Tamiya 35027 Barricade Set for 1:35 dioramas

An obstacle changes the whole meaning of a scene: a vehicle is no longer simply driving, it has to stop, work around a barrier or force a block. The Tamiya 35027 set contains parts to build 6 wooden log barricades and 6 metal obstacles – Czech hedgehogs made of I-beams.

Both types can be placed independently, forming single road blocks or complete belts of obstacles. Barbed wire is not included in the set – if you want to add it to the scene, materials are available separately. The parts come from 1973 tooling and match Tamiya vehicles and figures in 1:35 scale.

What is in the box:

  • Parts to build 6 wooden barricades (log barriers)
  • Parts to build 6 metal obstacles (Czech hedgehogs made of I-beams)

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Item number: 35027
  • Manufacturer: Tamiya
  • Type: diorama accessories
  • Tooling: 1973

Assembly and painting required

The parts have to be removed from the sprues, cleaned up, assembled and painted. Cement, paints and modelling tools are not included in the set and must be obtained separately.

Use in a diorama:

  • A road or bridge block built from log barriers
  • A line of Czech hedgehogs defending a town, a beach or a crossing
  • A checkpoint with obstacles staggered to force vehicles to slow down
  • The approaches to a fortified position – hedgehogs placed in front of trenches and weapon pits
  • A pushed-aside, overturned obstacle marking where a vehicle broke through

Tools you will need:

  • Sprue cutters
  • Hobby knife and files or sandpaper to clean up the parts
  • Polystyrene cement
  • Model paints, brushes or an airbrush
  • Precision modelling tweezers

Log barriers and Czech hedgehogs:

The Czech hedgehog is one of the simplest and most recognisable anti-tank obstacles: three lengths of steel I-beam joined into a three-dimensional star that always rests on the ground and points upwards, whichever way it falls. The design takes its name from the Czechoslovak border fortifications of the 1930s. Its advantage was that it did not need to be dug in – it was simply set down, and a tank trying to ram it risked lifting its hull and throwing a track.

During the Second World War hedgehogs appeared in huge numbers: on the approaches to Moscow in 1941, in the streets of defended cities and finally on the beaches of the Atlantic Wall as part of the anti-landing obstacles. Log barriers were used alongside them – beams and tree trunks dug in or laid across a road, often reinforced with earth and stones. They were cheap, could be built from local materials and were effective against motorised columns, so they were raised everywhere from France to the Eastern Front.

About the manufacturer – Tamiya:

Tamiya is a Japanese company based in Shizuoka, active since 1946 – first as a timber business and, from the 1960s, as a manufacturer of plastic scale models. The brand built its reputation on precise tooling, good parts fit and clear instructions, which is why its kits are chosen by beginners and experienced modellers alike.

The 1:35 Military Miniature Series, to which this set belongs, covers military vehicles, figures and diorama accessories. A shared scale and consistent style make it easy to combine parts from different Tamiya sets in one scene, and classic diorama accessories have been basic modelling equipment for decades.
