Description

Tamiya 35385 Livestock Set II for 1:35 dioramas

A horse by a paddock, a cow in a pasture, a dog running out towards the soldiers – the Tamiya 35385 set provides eight animal figures in 1:35 scale that give a scene a rural, everyday character and create a contrast with the military hardware.

The box contains a horse, a cow, a pig, two sheep and three dogs of different breeds – a basset hound, a golden retriever and a doberman. No human figures are included. The set comes from new 2023 tooling and is a natural companion to the earlier Livestock Set (35128), which covers poultry and smaller animals.

What is in the box:

  • A horse
  • A cow
  • A pig
  • 2 sheep
  • 3 dogs: a basset hound, a golden retriever and a doberman

Kit specifications:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Item number: 35385
  • Manufacturer: Tamiya
  • Type: diorama accessories – animal figures
  • Tooling: 2023 (new tooling)

Assembly and painting required

The parts have to be removed from the sprues, cleaned up, assembled and painted. Cement, paints and modelling tools are not included in the set and must be obtained separately.

Use in a diorama:

  • A farm or pasture with a military column passing through
  • The horse by a paddock, a cart, or as a draught animal in a supply scene
  • Dogs accompanying soldier or civilian figures – a natural way of bringing a scene to life
  • Animals as a sense of scale and a contrast to an armoured vehicle
  • Civilian and post-war scenes where livestock forms the background of everyday life
  • Combined with the Livestock Set (35128) for a full, varied farmyard

Tools you will need:

  • Sprue cutters
  • Hobby knife and files or sandpaper to clean up the parts
  • Polystyrene cement
  • Model paints and brushes; washes and dry-brushing work well on animal coats
  • Precision modelling tweezers

Horses, cattle and dogs in a diorama:

Contrary to the image of a fully motorised war, the horse remained one of the basic means of transport in the Second World War. The Wehrmacht used hundreds of thousands of horses to pull guns, supply wagons and field kitchens, and the armies of Eastern Europe did the same. Horses were of course also found on the farms over which the front rolled.

Cattle, pigs and sheep are the natural background of any rural scene – from Normandy through Italy to the Eastern Front. Dogs accompanied civilians and soldiers alike; they lived on the farms and often became the unofficial mascots of units. The three breeds reproduced in this set – basset hound, golden retriever and doberman – give plenty of freedom in building rural, urban and modern scenes.

For the modeller, animal figures are above all a narrative tool: a horse turning its head or a dog running towards a column leads the viewer eye and gives structure to the composition of a diorama.

About the manufacturer – Tamiya:

Tamiya is a Japanese company based in Shizuoka, active since 1946 – first as a timber business and, from the 1960s, as a manufacturer of plastic scale models. The brand built its reputation on precise tooling, good parts fit and clear instructions, which is why its kits are chosen by beginners and experienced modellers alike.

The 1:35 Military Miniature Series, to which this set belongs, covers military vehicles, figures and diorama accessories. A shared scale and consistent style make it easy to combine parts from different Tamiya sets in one scene.
