Description

Plastic model kit of the de Havilland Mosquito FB Mk.VI / NF Mk.II in 1:72 scale

Tamiya 60747 depicts the de Havilland Mosquito – a British multirole aircraft of largely wooden construction that, with its two Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, reached exceptional speeds, earning it the nickname 'Wooden Wonder'. The model lets you build one of two versions: the FB Mk.VI fighter-bomber or the NF Mk.II night fighter.

The kit is from Tamiya's own tooling and offers optional parts for different airframe configurations – including different propellers, exhaust shrouds and underwing stores or fuel tanks. The decals finish the aircraft in RAF colours.

What's in the box:

  • Plastic sprues with fuselage, wings, engine nacelles and tail parts
  • Optional parts for the FB Mk.VI and NF Mk.II versions (propellers, exhaust shrouds and more)
  • Underwing stores or fuel tanks
  • Clear canopy parts
  • Waterslide decal sheet for RAF marking options
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:72
  • Item number: 60747
  • Manufacturer: Tamiya
  • Assembled length: approx. 173 mm, wingspan: approx. 229 mm
  • Skill level: intermediate

Note: glue, paints and modelling tools are not included. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Building the model:

As a Tamiya-tooled kit it features good parts fit. Before gluing, decide which version – FB Mk.VI or NF Mk.II – you are building, as they differ in the nose section and equipment. Paint the cockpit interior before closing the fuselage; the framed canopy is easier to paint with self-adhesive masks fitted.

Mosquito FB Mk.VIs wore the typical RAF day camouflage: Dark Green and Ocean Grey on top over Medium Sea Grey below. Lay the decals over a gloss coat to avoid silvering, then finish with a satin varnish. The instructions provide paint references.

Tools you'll need:

  • Modelling nippers for removing parts from the sprues
  • Hobby knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for cleaning up sprue-gate marks
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Brushes of various sizes and modelling paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • Panel-line wash to emphasise detail and recesses
  • Gloss varnish for the decals and a satin coat to finish
  • Optional: self-adhesive canopy masks

About the aircraft – de Havilland Mosquito (FB Mk.VI / NF Mk.II):

The Mosquito was conceived as a fast bomber of wooden construction that would evade interception through speed rather than defensive armament. The idea proved so successful that the aircraft was quickly developed into many versions: bombers, reconnaissance, fighter-bombers and night fighters.

The FB Mk.VI is a fighter-bomber armed with cannon and machine guns, able to carry bombs and rockets and used for precision attacks on ground targets, among other roles. The NF Mk.II is a radar-equipped night fighter intended to engage enemy aircraft after dark.

Original aircraft specifications (de Havilland Mosquito):

  • Length: approx. 12.43 m
  • Wingspan: 16.51 m
  • Height: approx. 4.65 m
  • Max take-off weight: approx. 10,000 kg
  • Powerplant: 2 Rolls-Royce Merlin inline engines (V12, liquid-cooled), approx. 1,480 hp each
  • Max speed: approx. 580 km/h (depending on version)
  • Armament (FB Mk.VI): four 20 mm cannon and four 7.7 mm machine guns; underwing bombs and rockets
  • Crew: 2
  • Construction: largely wooden
