Description

3D-printed resin model of the Polish armoured car wz.29 "Ursus" in 1:48 scale

Toro Model 48037 is a self-assembly model, 3D-printed in resin, depicting the Polish heavy armoured car wz.29 "Ursus" in 1:48 scale. It is an interesting and rarely seen subject – the vehicle was built only in a small series, and plastic models of it are practically unavailable.

What's in the box:

  • 3D-printed resin parts for self-assembly

Model specifications:

  • Scale: 1:48
  • Product code: 48037
  • Manufacturer: Toro Model
  • Manufacturing technology: 3D print, resin
  • Assembled model length: approx. 114 mm
  • Difficulty: intermediate

Note: the set does not include glue, paints or modelling tools. The model is intended for self-assembly.

Assembly:

The model is produced by 3D printing in resin. Resin parts are assembled with cyanoacrylate glue (resin cannot be bonded with plastic cement). Before assembly it is worth gently removing any print supports and residue, washing the parts and smoothing fine details. Given the nature of resin and the small size of the parts, care and precise tools are recommended.

For a 1939 scheme, the recommended colours are those typical of Polish armour of the period – a multi-tone camouflage of dark olive, brown and sand/grey-sand applied to the model. Military vehicles are usually given a matt finish, and details can be emphasised by applying a wash.

Required tools:

  • Modelling knife or scalpel to remove print supports
  • Files and sandpaper for smoothing parts
  • Cyanoacrylate glue (for resin)
  • Precise modelling tweezers
  • Primer suitable for resin
  • Brushes of various sizes and modelling paints
  • Modelling wash to emphasise details
  • Optionally: pigments for dust and mud effects

About the vehicle – wz.29 "Ursus" armoured car:

The wz.29 armoured car, commonly known as the "Ursus", was a Polish heavy armoured car of the interwar period. It was designed at the Military Engineering Research Institute under Lt. Eng. Rudolf Gundlach (later the inventor of the reversible periscope), using the strengthened chassis of the Ursus A truck. The prototype was completed in 1929, after which the vehicle was taken into Polish Army service.

Owing to significant shortcomings – low speed, limited manoeuvrability and poor cross-country performance – the wz.29 was built only in a small series (about 10 examples). A characteristic feature was the second, rear driving position, allowing the vehicle to withdraw under fire without turning around. The armament was mounted in a rotating octagonal turret.

All examples were eventually assigned to an armoured unit at Modlin. The wz.29 cars took part in the September 1939 campaign, fighting among others with the 11th Armoured Battalion during the withdrawal towards Lublin. Despite being obsolete, they remain one of the few wholly Polish armoured cars of the era.

Specifications (wz.29 armoured car):

  • Length: approx. 5.49 m
  • Width: approx. 1.85 m
  • Height: approx. 2.47 m
  • Weight: approx. 4.8 t
