The Trumpeter 05117 kit depicts the AH-1W Super Cobra, a two-seat attack helicopter used by the United States Marine Corps. This version features the “Turned Exhaust” modification, redirecting engine exhausts sideways to reduce the helicopter’s infrared signature and increase survivability against heat-seeking missiles. The AH-1W represents one of the most recognizable attack helicopters of the late 20th century.

About the AH-1W Super Cobra:

The AH-1W Super Cobra, produced by Bell Helicopter, is a twin-engine attack helicopter derived from the AH-1J Sea Cobra. Entering service with the USMC in the mid-1980s, it served as the Marine Corps’ primary attack platform until replaced by the AH-1Z Viper. Powered by two GE T700-GE-401 engines, the Super Cobra could carry a wide range of armament, including AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, TOWs, and 2.75-inch Hydra rockets. The Turned Exhaust version improved heat dispersion, reducing vulnerability to infrared-guided missiles. The AH-1W saw extensive combat in Iraq, Kuwait, Somalia and Libya.
