The Semovente da 90/53 was developed by mounting the Cannone da 90/53, a dual-purpose anti-aircraft and anti-tank gun, on the chassis of the M14/41 tank. Only about 30 units were built due to limited industrial capacity, but they proved effective in North Africa and Italy. The 90 mm gun was capable of defeating heavily armored Allied tanks such as the Matilda and the Sherman, giving Italian forces a much-needed anti-tank capability.
