Description

Plastic Model Kit of the Soviet ZIL-131 Military Truck in 1:35 Scale

Zvezda 3706 is a self-assembly plastic model kit representing the Soviet ZIL-131 off-road military truck – one of the most widely produced military cargo vehicles in the history of the Soviet and Russian armed forces. The vehicle entered service in 1966 and remained in production until 2012 at the Likhachev Moscow Automobile Plant and later at the AMUR factory in Novouralsk. During nearly 50 years of production, close to one million examples were built in many variants – cargo truck, tractor unit, dump truck, fuel tanker, and as a chassis for numerous weapons systems, communications equipment, command vehicles, and rescue vehicles.

The model was released by Zvezda in 2026 as a completely new tooling, featuring richly detailed structural components. The characteristic three-axle 6×6 layout with tandem rear axles has been carefully reproduced, along with the open cargo bed featuring realistically textured wooden flooring and side panels. The driver’s cab includes interior details such as the dashboard, seats, and steering wheel visible through the windows and open doors.

Inside the box you will find:

  • Plastic sprues with cab, chassis, engine, drivetrain axles, and cargo bed components
  • Six wheels with realistic tire tread detail
  • Cab interior details – seats, dashboard, steering wheel, and control levers
  • Clear parts for cab windows and headlights
  • Water-slide decal sheet
  • Illustrated assembly instructions

Model technical details:

  • Scale: 1:35
  • Catalog number: 3706
  • Manufacturer: Zvezda
  • Finished model length: approx. 201 mm
  • Difficulty level: intermediate

Note: The kit does not include glue, paints, or modeling tools. The model requires assembly and painting.

Building the model:

Modern-tooling Zvezda kits are known for their solid level of detail and sensible parts breakdown. Assembly of the three-axle chassis and complex drivetrain requires careful alignment of the axles and differentials – taking time during assembly will ensure that all wheels sit correctly on the same plane. The cab interior and dashboard are best painted before assembling the cab structure.

The standard paint scheme for Soviet and Russian ZIL-131 trucks is a uniform dark “Russian Green” (4BO), sometimes combined with black panels around the lights or identification stripes. Vehicles used by East Germany and other Warsaw Pact armies typically wore the same color with occasional local modifications. Recommended modeling paints include Tamiya XF-65 Field Grey or Mr. Hobby H304 Olive Drab for the base color. A gloss coat is recommended before applying decals (to prevent decal silvering). A matte finish accurately reproduces the appearance of military vehicles in service. After painting, a modeling wash can be applied to emphasize panel lines and structural depth, while pigments may optionally be used to create dust and mud effects on the wheels and lower chassis.

Essential tools:

  • Model sprue cutters for removing parts from the sprues
  • Modeling knife or scalpel
  • Files and sandpaper for smoothing mold attachment points
  • Plastic cement (e.g. Tamiya Extra Thin Cement)
  • Precision modeling tweezers
  • Paint brushes in various sizes
  • Model paints (acrylic or enamel)
  • Modeling wash for highlighting details
  • Pigments for dust and mud effects on the chassis

About the vehicle – ZIL-131:

The ZIL-131 was a Soviet universal 6×6 off-road military truck developed at the Likhachev Automobile Plant (ZIL) in Moscow as the successor to the ZIL-157. Prototypes were built in the early 1960s, and serial production began in 1966. The ZIL-131 shared many components with the civilian ZIL-130, significantly simplifying production and maintenance. The vehicle was powered by a 6-liter ZIL-130 V8 gasoline engine producing approximately 150 hp, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox and a selectable 6×6 drivetrain allowing the front axle drive to be disengaged on paved roads.

For nearly 50 years, the ZIL-131 served in the Soviet, Russian, and Warsaw Pact armies (East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania), as well as in many Third World countries receiving Soviet military aid. The truck saw service in conflicts including Afghanistan (1979–1989), Chechnya, the Balkans, and numerous other war zones. In addition to transporting troops and supplies, the ZIL-131 chassis was used as a platform for many weapon systems, including BM-21 Grad rocket launchers (while the standard Grad launcher used the Ural-375D chassis, some modifications utilized the ZIL-131), command vehicles, radio stations, fuel tankers, workshop trucks, and rescue vehicles. Production of the ZIL-131 finally ended in 2012 following the closure of the AMUR plant, although many examples remain in military and civilian service today.
