The most numerous Hurricane variant, armed with four 20 mm cannon, in the simpler and more affordable Model Kit boxing. Arma Hobby 70036 uses the same tooling as the 70035 Expert Set, so the modeller gets an identical airframe and the same very fine surface texture, including the fabric-covered rear fuselage.

The kit offers plenty of configuration choices. There are two types of cannon barrels, a Rotol propeller with spinner and an optional Vokes tropical filter. The windscreen is a separate part and the sliding hood is split in two, so the canopy can be shown closed or slid back. The landing lights in the wing leading edge are reproduced, along with optional wingtip navigation lights.

The Techmod decals cover two marking options. The first is LF331/WC-G "Target For Tonight" of No. 309 Polish Fighter Squadron based at Peterhead between April and October 1944. The second is BD868/QO-P of No. 3 Sqn RAF at Hunsdon, operated from August 1941 to April 1942 – the aircraft of P/O Hunt at the time of the Channel Dash on 12 February 1942. The instructions include a template for cutting your own canopy masks.

Building the model:

This boxing is aimed at modellers who want a well-detailed Hurricane without working with photo-etched parts. Assembly is straightforward and the parts count is low, although 1:72 scale demands care with the smallest details – cannon barrels, undercarriage legs and the pitot tube. We suggest painting the cockpit before joining the fuselage halves. It is worth deciding early on whether to fit the Vokes tropical filter and which cannon barrels to use, as this defines the finished silhouette; canopy masks can be cut from masking tape using the template in the instructions.

Both options wear the RAF day fighter scheme: Dark Green and Ocean Grey uppersurfaces over Medium Sea Grey, with a Sky fuselage band. We recommend applying decals over a gloss coat to limit silvering, and finishing the model with satin varnish, typical of aircraft of the period. To take the detail further you may consider aftermarket accessories available separately, such as turned metal cannon barrels or photo-etched sets for this model.

About the aircraft – Hawker Hurricane Mk IIc:

The Hurricane entered RAF service in 1937 as the service's first monoplane fighter with retractable undercarriage and an enclosed cockpit. Its fuselage, however, retained a classic tubular structure with fabric covering, which simplified field repairs and allowed production to be expanded quickly. During the Battle of Britain the type formed the backbone of Britain's fighter defence.

The Mk II received the Rolls-Royce Merlin XX of around 1280 hp with a two-speed supercharger, improving performance at medium and higher altitudes. The Mk IIc, armed with four 20 mm Hispano Mk II cannon, turned out to be the most numerous variant of the whole family. The cannon battery delivered far heavier firepower than a set of 7.7 mm machine guns and proved effective against ground targets and bombers alike.

From 1941 the Mk IIc was increasingly flown at night, both in defensive patrols and on intruder sorties over enemy airfields in France and the Low Countries. Polish squadrons in Britain flew the type as well, and aircraft of this version served on every front where the RAF fought: North Africa, Malta, the Far East and Burma.
