Description

Eduard EX884 mask set – canopy painting masks for the P-38J Lightning model (Tamiya) in 1:48 scale

Eduard EX884 is a set of self-adhesive 1:48 masks for painting the canopy framing and other glazing, and the wheel hubs, tailored to the P-38J Lightning model from Tamiya. The masks are die-cut from yellow Kabuki masking paper, giving sharp edges without hand masking with tape. The base kit is not included. The TFace version includes masks for both the exterior and interior of the glazing.

What's in the box:

  • Sheet of self-adhesive masks made of yellow Kabuki masking paper in the TFace version – separate masks for the exterior and interior of the glazing, plus wheel hub masks
  • Mask placement instructions

Set specifications:

  • Scale: 1:48
  • Catalogue number: EX884
  • Manufacturer: Eduard
  • Dedicated kit: P-38J Lightning from Tamiya
  • Accessory type: canopy painting masks (TFace version)
  • Material: yellow Kabuki masking paper, machine-cut

Self-adhesive painting masks – crisp canopy frame edges

Eduard masks are self-adhesive stencils die-cut from low-tack yellow Kabuki masking paper suited to delicate model surfaces. They cover the clear areas of the glazing and leave only the canopy framing exposed, so that after airbrushing you get sharp, even frame edges – hard to achieve when masking by hand with tape.

The recommended method is to apply the masks to clean, degreased glazing, press the edges down firmly and then airbrush the paint. Once the paint has dried, the masks are removed. The masks are intended for single use and should not be left on the model for a long time.

About the aircraft – Lockheed P-38 Lightning:

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was an American twin-engine fighter, first flown in 1939, with a distinctive twin-boom layout and a central crew nacelle. It was powered by two turbo-supercharged Allison V-1710 inline engines, one in each tail boom. All of its guns were concentrated in the nose of the nacelle, which eased aiming. The design combined high speed, long range and heavy firepower.

The P-38 was used as a fighter, escort, fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. It proved especially useful in the Pacific, where its range and twin-engine reliability were advantages over vast expanses of water. Numerous variants were produced, differing in engines, equipment and armament, including unarmed reconnaissance versions. Over 10,000 examples were built.

Original specifications (Lockheed P-38 Lightning):

  • Length: 11.53 m
  • Wingspan: 15.85 m
  • Height: 3.91 m
  • Takeoff weight: approx. 9,800 kg
  • Crew: 1
  • Powerplant: 2 Allison V-1710 inline engines, approx. 1,600 hp each
  • Max speed: approx. 665 km/h
  • Ceiling: approx. 13,400 m
  • Range: approx. 2,000 km (more with drop tanks)
  • Armament: 1 x 20 mm cannon, 4 x 12.7 mm machine guns, bombs and rockets on hardpoints
  • Production: 1941-1945, over 10,000 built
