Mottling masks – even camouflage blotches by spraying

This set is a photo-etched metal template for reproducing the camouflage mottling typical of the fuselage sides of German fighters. The template is held against the model and paint is airbrushed through the openings, giving even, repeatable blotches without freehand painting. The metal template can be reused.

The recommended method is a light spray from a short distance, adjusting blotch density by moving the template away. The thin, springy etched sheet is easy to fit to curved surfaces.

About the aircraft – Messerschmitt Bf 109G:

The Messerschmitt Bf 109G, known as the Gustav, is the most numerously produced version of the German fighter, introduced in 1942. Its main change was the more powerful Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine. The increase in weight and power led to structural strengthening and the characteristic bulges on the engine cowling, housing the breeches of the machine guns in some sub-versions.

The Gustav was the backbone of the Luftwaffe fighter force in the second half of the war, used on all fronts for both air combat and bomber interception. Its armament was a cannon firing through the propeller hub plus machine guns or cannon above the engine, often supplemented by underwing gun pods. The G versions were produced in the tens of thousands.

Original specifications (Messerschmitt Bf 109G):

  • Crew: 1
  • Length: 8.9 m
  • Wingspan: 9.9 m
  • Height: 2.6 m
  • Empty weight: approx. 2,700 kg
  • Take-off weight: approx. 3,400 kg
  • Powerplant: 1 x Daimler-Benz DB 605A inline engine, approx. 1,475 hp
  • Max speed: approx. 640 km/h
  • Ceiling: 12,000 m
  • Range: approx. 850 km (with drop tank)
  • Armament: 2 x 13 mm machine guns, 1 x 20 mm or 30 mm cannon through the propeller hub; optional 2 underwing cannon
  • Production: approx. 12,000-13,000 aircraft of the G series (1942-1944)
