About the battleship Musashi
Musashi was the second of the Yamato-class super-battleships, conceived as the most powerful gun-armed vessels ever built. Commissioned in 1942, she served as an integral part of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Combined Fleet, performing escort and flagship duties during her early service period. Musashi later gained historical prominence during the Battle of the Sibuyan Sea, where she was sunk after repeated air attacks on 24 October 1944. Her legacy endures as a symbol of the dramatic and shifting naval warfare of WWII.
Technical data of the original:
- Length: approx. 263 m
- Displacement: approx. 72,800 tons (full load)
- Armament (1942): 9 × 460 mm guns, secondary artillery, AA guns
- Propulsion: steam turbines, approx. 150,000 hp
- Top speed: approx. 27 knots
