About the battleship Yamato

Yamato was the flagship of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the largest battleship ever constructed. Designed to outgun any adversary, she carried nine massive 460 mm guns and featured exceptionally heavy armor. Commissioned in 1941, Yamato served throughout the Pacific War but rarely engaged in the decisive gun battles for which she had been built. In 1945 she undertook the fateful Operation Ten-Gō, during which she was sunk by overwhelming air power. Her legacy endures as a symbol of naval engineering prowess and the end of the battleship era.

Technical data of the original:

  • Length: approx. 263 m
  • Displacement: approx. 72,800 tons (full load)
  • Armament (1941): 9 × 460 mm guns, secondary and AA batteries
  • Propulsion: steam turbines, approx. 150,000 hp
  • Top speed: approx. 27 knots
