Description
Model of the four-axle Falns bulk goods wagon in Belgian National Railways livery
Bulk wagons rarely make the cover of a photo album, yet without them there would be no movement of coal, ore or aggregates — and on a layout their impact comes precisely from numbers. This model reproduces a four-axle Falns wagon in the colours of the Belgian operator SNCB. It is built to N scale and measures 83 mm over buffers, which makes it possible to assemble realistically long freight trains even on a modest layout.
The workmanship rests on an even, smooth paint finish and finely reproduced steps and handrails. The spring assemblies on the bogies are sharply engraved, and the outline is completed by contrasting hooks, attached index boxes and a brakeman's platform — the details that decide how convincing a vehicle looks in N scale. Colour accents follow the operator's pattern. The coupling sits in an NEM pocket with a close-coupling mechanism, keeping the gaps between wagons small while preserving good running characteristics even in longer rakes.
Model specifications:
- Scale: N (1:160)
- Item number: 40906
- Manufacturer: PIKO
- Length over buffers: 83 mm
- Railway administration: SNCB
- Era: V according to the manufacturer's data table
- Intended for: model layouts supplied with DC direct current
- Coupling: NEM pocket with close-coupling mechanism
- Minimum radius: 192 mm
- Detailing: fine steps and handrails, sharply engraved bogie spring assemblies, contrasting hooks, attached index boxes, brakeman's platform
- Ready to run, factory painted and assembled
- Age recommendation: 14 years and up
Please note: this wagon has no drive of its own.
It is a trailing vehicle intended for freight trains hauled by a locomotive — it does not move on its own and needs no decoder or digital settings. To run it you need a powered track, a controller and a locomotive. The minimum radius is 192 mm, worth allowing for when planning curves and points on a layout. The wagon looks best in rakes of several units, as is typical of bulk traffic.
About the Falns bulk goods wagon:
The Falns designation belongs to the UIC letter system, in which F denotes an open freight wagon of special construction. The following letters refine the design: "a" stands for four wheelsets, "l" for gravity discharge through high-mounted openings, "n" for a load limit differing from the standard and "s" for approval to run in trains faster than ordinary freight. In practice this is a four-axle bogie wagon with a sloping floor and flaps in the side walls.
The operating principle is simple and effective: the load slides down the sloping floor under its own weight to the open flaps, so unloading requires neither a tippler nor a crane. The flaps — two on each side — are opened mechanically with a crank, pneumatically or hydraulically, depending on the version. Wagons of this kind are intended for bulk goods that are insensitive to moisture: coal, coke, ore, gravel and ballast. Deutsche Bundesbahn put Falns wagons into service from 1987, and designs of this family spread to many European railways and private operators.
In real freight traffic, bulk wagons usually run in uniform, long rakes shuttling between a mine, a quarry or a port and the consignee. The same holds on a layout — several identical Falns wagons behind a freight locomotive convey bulk traffic far better than a single vehicle, however well detailed.
Prototype specifications (Falns type wagon):
- Type: open freight wagon of special construction, self-discharging
- Axles: four, on two bogies
- Discharge: by gravity, through flaps in the side walls — two per side
- Flap operation: mechanical by crank, pneumatic or hydraulic depending on version
- Purpose: moisture-insensitive bulk goods — coal, coke, ore, gravel, ballast
- Service: Falns wagons introduced by Deutsche Bundesbahn from 1987, designs of this family used by many European operators
About the manufacturer – PIKO:
