Description

Model of the Slmmnps Heavy-Duty Flat Wagon in the Livery of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB-CFF) with an M113

A model of the Slmmnps-type heavy-duty flat wagon – a distinctive Swiss Federal Railways (SBB-CFF) wagon used for the rail transport of heavy military vehicles. The H0-scale wagon was developed by PIKO and introduced as a novelty for 2026. It is loaded with an M113 armored personnel carrier, and its shape, colour scheme, and printing are based on the real-life variants of the prototype from Era V.

The model is distinguished by finely engraved bogies and functional details such as movable handles and adjustable loading wedges. The M113 load and the wedges are removable, so the wagon can be run with this load, with a different vehicle, or empty. Its excellent rolling characteristics make the model ideally suited to realistic military and heavy-duty trains on an H0 layout.

Model specifications:

  • Scale: H0 (1:87)
  • Catalogue number: 96280
  • Manufacturer: PIKO
  • Length over buffers: 153 mm
  • Era: V
  • Operator: SBB-CFF (Swiss Federal Railways)
  • Wagon type: Slmmnps heavy-duty flat wagon for transporting military vehicles
  • Load: M113 armored personnel carrier (removable)
  • System: two-rail direct current (DC) layouts; non-powered wagon, no decoder
  • Coupling: NEM pocket with close-coupling kinematics (Kurzkupplungskulisse)
  • Minimum operating radius: 358 mm
  • Details: finely engraved bogies, movable handles, removable and adjustable loading wedges
  • The model is painted and ready to run (trailing wagon)

Please note: this model is a non-powered trailing wagon – a locomotive and a track with power supply are required to run it.

The wagon has no drive of its own and no decoder, and it is not a starter set – it does not include track, a locomotive, or a controller. To set it in motion, couple it to a train hauled by a locomotive and place it on a powered track. Because the wagon contains no electronics, it can be used without any restrictions on both analogue and digital (DCC) layouts. The M113 load and the loading wedges are removable, so the wagon can be displayed with or without its load.

Model railways – digital or analogue control?

The DCC digital control system allows several locomotives to run independently on the same track – each one receives individual commands while the voltage in the rails remains constant, which makes it possible to realistically reproduce movement and to control the lights and sound of each vehicle separately. In an analogue system, all vehicles on a given circuit are controlled simultaneously by varying the supply voltage. This model is a non-powered freight wagon with no electronics, so it is fully compatible with both types of control – the operating mode is determined by the locomotive hauling the train.

About the wagon and its load:

The Slmmps and Slmmnps heavy-duty flat wagons are Swiss vehicles designed to carry the heaviest loads, including the military vehicles of the Swiss Army. Thanks to their lowered, reinforced loading deck with a recess for the vehicle, they were used to transport tanks, self-propelled guns, and lighter tracked vehicles such as armored personnel carriers. The Slmmnps variant is the version fitted with brake shoes. These wagons are an integral part of Swiss military trains of Era V.

The M113 loaded on the wagon is one of the most widely produced armored personnel carriers in history – developed in the USA by FMC and introduced into service in the early 1960s. It was the first modern, mass-produced infantry carrier; it used lightweight aluminium armour, was amphibious, and ran on tracks. More than 80,000 examples were built in a great many variants.

The Swiss Army purchased the M113 in 1963, designating it the Schützenpanzer 63 (Spz 63); over time the fleet grew with further examples and modernized variants. Swiss M113s received, among other things, additional armour, a new engine and transmission, and reinforced running gear. It was vehicles like these that were carried by rail on wagons of the type reproduced in the model.

Prototype specifications (M113 armored personnel carrier):

  • Manufacturer: FMC Corporation (USA)
  • Introduced into service: from 1960
  • Service in Switzerland: as the Schützenpanzer 63 (from 1963)
  • Crew: 2 + 11 dismounts
  • Length: approx. 4.86 m
  • Width: approx. 2.69 m
  • Height: approx. 2.5 m
  • Combat weight: approx. 12.3 t
  • Armour: aluminium
  • Armament: usually a 12.7 mm M2HB heavy machine gun
  • Engine: Detroit Diesel 6V53 diesel, approx. 275 hp (early versions with a petrol engine)
  • Maximum speed: approx. 66 km/h (approx. 5.8 km/h in water)
  • Amphibious capability: yes
  • Production: more than 80,000 units in many variants
